Sounds a good idea, but it is kind of a compromise.
  • How much lag will the second (hereafter known as leech) player get between real action and displayed action, and that *isn't* counting Ãœber-weapon mods?
  • As said before, what if the leech player presses the host player's keys? (But I guess it *could* work both ways...)
  • Who gets the CPU/memory stress? This could potentially be an advantage if physics calculations are split between the two computers evenly, but I doubt that would happen until official multiplayer goes live.
  • What if the leech player gets annoyed with the host's techniques and decides to go for a little stroll in the host's system files? Another case of the "Hey, I've got voice recognition on my PC!" "OK then, start run see emm dee enter format see colon enter why" syndrome, perhaps? Read it out loud, hopefully it'll make sense

Especially with that last issue, there are risks that I'm not going to take. And that DEFINITELY includes allowing my "mates" to remotely control my computer.
Ah well, looks like I'll be waiting for official servers to pop up around the place before the multiplayer loving can begin.

Well, a) I wouldn't trust half the people I know, b) My router is firewalled, so I can't even host a game of Worms Armageddon, let alone remote assistance.

So... have you actually tested it and got it working?
If so, I'd be interested to see what happens to Pagefile usage/CPU usage (use Task Manager <ctrl-alt-delete> --> Performance to see) on both when lag occurs (due to an overpowered weapon)...

Could it be possible that only ones game lags and the other can play without lag?

No, I think that they will both lag (as one is just viewing the screen contents of the other), I'm just wondering if it's just the host that gets the huge strain on the memory/CPU. I guess that *should* be the case as that's where all the processing is actually going on, but it'd be interesting to see.

As said, an imperfect solution, but a solution nonetheless.

'Twould be me, just with a neon effect.
And yes, the filename itself was "creepyneon.jpg".
Who's that in yours? It's kinda creepy.

Another thought, how adversely would the roundtrip (i.e. ping time) for the leech player's commands affect his experience of the game (this being without mods)? It'd be like a laggy UT server, where you lurch forward 100m every few seconds (without moving otherwise)... Euch, that'd be horrible.

I think it's Baxter Stockman from some Ninja Turtles game.
Was it Baxter Stockman? Some scientist fly-fella.

Right, VNC uses JPG's to send any sections of the screen that have changed to the client, this is quite computationally expensive anyway, so unless you were running dual core, superweapons might even cause it to time out :-P

Has anyone actually tried this yet because even over my network, its fairly slow, so over the internet it would be worse. I imagine key presses would be fairly responsive cos that'll only take a byte or so, JPG are obviously a lot bigger.

And yeah, only play people you trust.

1. There are plenty of free VNC apps out there. Google for it...

2. VNC is definately not an option for playing games with friends. The screen refresh rate for the "leecher" is terrible slow. That's fine for editing Word docs or playing music, but for a fast paced game that requires quick reflexes like CC, VNC would leave you in the dust. Definatly not fun times.

3. On a side note, if you were to try this the host would not see much more lag in the game than playing a local multiplayer game. As long as you have a decent processor. All the game calculations would be made host side. Only the final game output screen is transmitted and only the mouse and keyboard moves are transmitted back.

4. On another side note, Logmein does have a totally free version, but it's a little too buggy for my taste. Like I said, just Google for it and you'll see that RealVNC is at the top of the list. A great application indeed. I use it everyday. KVM switches aren't all they're cracked up to be...
