This is what gets me most. Sure, I would have been miffed if they had been automatically turned off through the next PHPBB patch, but I would have just turned it back and forgot it.


Except that doesn't happen here anymore, don't know if you noticed. Both Grif and THOR are (as has been stated many times) pretty damn tame compared to the past.

I am pretty sure Thorsecuting or Grifocausting us is against the rules.

Also, a simple experience formula could be implemented.
Like: "Number of Days since joining - Post count = Experience" or something (obviously something more effective).

Or a simple rating system (though I doubt it would do anything except for make lafe feel really bad).

I did mention, though, that I wanted to retain some sort of newb-o-meter on the side there. Haven't decided what yet. Maybe a custom rank to those that have less than 50 posts?

Actually, Zalo's idea is great. An experience meter based on the combined value of both quantity and (the bigger part should be) quality, with exp subtracted for retarded questions/topics/answers.

Your own rationale disproves the usefulness of a post-count meter, Weasel. Someone (I think you) said in this thread that productive posters aren't always those with the highest post count.

So categorizing someone as a noob by their post count and join date (or a function of the two) is discriminatory and potentially inaccurate. Why you think that is a good idea is beyond me.

All of the solutions presented based on some metric are inherently relative. The number of posts, the perceived "quality" of a post, and the join date (and any other metrics) are extremely arbitrary ab subject to interpretation and external influence. I think the best way to let someone be perceived as beneficial or detrimental is to just let them post freely without concern for metrics. The best posters and contributors will provide the best content and assistance. Others just won't.

I'm on your side of the fence as an administrator as a whole now, weasel. But in this instance, you are trying too hard.

I probably won't implement anything, but if I *was* to implement something, it'd be some sort of newb-o-meter and not just reintroducing the textfields.

I suppose I was pre-emptively looking for solutions to all the whining when I should've stuck to my guns a bit longer. I don't think that's 'trying too hard' though - it's just being reactive to the community (instead of ignorant).

But let's not judge until something (if anything) is actually put in place.
