Here's a sneak peak of an upcoming blog post all about wildlife. Sorry for the eyestrain and exasperation.

Haha - you're awful.

I'm not sure what I think about an abundance of wildlife in CC. Although I agree that the game will benefit from a wandering bit of fauna here and there, I think that the scales some people are mentioning in this thread are a little unreasonable. I'm not even talking about the obvious processing burden that having "swarms of insects" will have. The concept of having innocuous creatures on screen for immersion and not just objective or obstacle is much more impossible because of Cortex Command's single plain of interaction. This feature instantly makes anything collide-able a sort of enemy rather than decoration.

So yes, of course there should be wildlife to add some body to the world of Cortex Command - but within considerably strict limits.

So we make most of them GetsHitByMOs = 0 and HitsMOs = 0. Problem solved.

Got bored and started my own bit of wildlife. The sprites and offsets need a lot of work, but the concept is basically complete. Attached below for the curious.

Elephant?

Possibly a.. Do? A deer, a female deer.

you feel a resounding THUD in the air, a sound, it shakes the air and you feel it in your chest, it shakes the ground. a second or 2 later comes another one. and then another... soon it becomes a constant rumble of THUD! THUD! THUD! THUD! every 3/4 seconds... you see the forest slowly shift... a tree... Falls? no... that couldn't be a fall... it went up... and now back down... it smashes into your bunker, striking a door, and breaking it. it can't open or close. It isn't sealed... things... can get in, but you can't. in the few moments of distraction the tree provided, the beast is upon you.

A massive... thing, towers overhead... it stands an amazing 20 feet high... it more resembles a tower, or a tree than any animal ever recorded. each of its 4 massive trunks of legs jut clear down to the ground ending in flat stumps with rough leathery patches and what looks like.... bone? hove? several hooves? its hard to tell... there wide enough to crush a man in one step, into a paste. the legs have... multiple joints, like a spider, but they don't go the same direction. it seems to be able to step or turn in any direction. looking up it looks like the legs are attached to an immense grey block of leathery muscle and.... what is that?

The creature's... head?... seems to be grown INTO its body, with bone protruding from where you would guess its eyes would be, and back around into the top of the body, like some sort of ridge, or like an eyebrow, that extends all the way into it's back. it doesn't appear to have any sort of a spine either, but that seems irrelevent looking at this 'head' it has what looks like a long cone shaped bit of flesh, with long spikes of bone coming from its base radially... my god... there teeth.... the long cone-shape splits into a number of sections... its entire FACE splits revealing... teeth, and teeth, and muscle, and jaw... and teeth.. several rows deep.. the teeth seem to move like individual appendages.... like an enormous meat-blender. it extents what looks like a long, smooth spike of bone out.... like some sort of hydraulic spike.... it retracts it.... it makes no sound beyond the wet sound of its maw moving slightly....

The creature rips several of your troops, clone and otherwise, into 3's.... and tosses the parts ot the side and plows over the front of your base.... it is hit by several heavy bullets, anti-vehicle rounds and a few rockets... but man-carried rockets are no match for this hulk. its moving towards your local cloning facility. its going to the nutrient supplies. it punches a hole clear through the side with that... spike.... and begins draining... like some enormous vampire tree. the only things you didn't use against it where air-strikes and orbital bombardments, because you aren't about to do that to your own base.

Based on the elephant.

Wait, how can a Plague Bear with rotting teeth and blackened gums and falling-off claws manage to eat a trooper? I'd think his jaw would fall off before he could chew through armor plating.

Either that or the bear is all like "naked plz then climb in kthx"

strongly acidic vomit + toxins.

Step 0 annoy the piss out of the locals to start.
Step 1 burn with acid vomit
Step 2 Maul
Step 3 maim to death
Step 4 eat

i think more benign creatures that add atmosphere would be cool. like large swarms of floating jellyfish, things that buzz around and don't bother you, even if you bother them. Having them behave like real animals would be great, not having them just be monsters. That's what i like about the crabs, they're pretty unassuming and dumb, even after you start shooting them.

Floating electrified jellyfish full of hydrogen, that sting you and shock you, and if you shoot them they pop, and pop eachother... I already did the exploding frogs so this is pointless. I made the floating jellyfish at, that panel on making your aliens alien. I made them the dominant race of earth after mankind goes extinct from swine-flu or something. they talk with ambient static, and have to use there 'in-door voice' or they could explode. talk about a rage-quit.

Also, flying mammals or insects that would be about as big as a house cat that fly at high altitudes and can possibly crash into your rocket/dropship. Required rocket/drop ship maneuvering skills.

Posted this in the other thread.

DUNE WORMS FOR CORTEX COMMAND!
Seriously, no other science fiction creature could be more appropriate for this game.

It tunnels, it eats things, it's a bit odd. It's also huge.
I DEMAND MORE DUNE WORMS IN MY DUNES.
