Post Re: My Mammoth Tank Eats The Map!
what the hell? how can you post something like that?
any ideas of what would work well for the walkpaths? i might just try looking at what ivans does, it does exactly what i want it to move like, so i should probably adapt it to my tank. i think they're the old hover tank walkpaths actually.. if anyone can help id appreciate it muchly though. its weight is also slightly off at the moment, but by off i mean too low. it only weighs 1.2 tonnes (the body), plus 400kg for the turret (in the version posted it is only 40 though :P), and 120kg for the gun. im thinking all this needs a LOT of boosting, but whatever. ill probably just boost the turret and gun a bit, to end up with an almost 2 tonne tank, still a little light, but ohwell :)

HELP ME :D

I "fixed" the limbpaths

they needed POWAR!! I added a 00 to each limbpath push strength
(dosent affects the walk speed speed!!)

though I didn't test crawl
but if you walk lets say right and then walk back on the same place the tank kind of gets stuck in the earth.. and also balance the jets location cus when I use the jets the back tends to get.. how shall I say it? LEFT BEHIND and if you jet too much in the air you flip..

oh did i mention i did not bother test it on anything else than concrete cus i know itll get stuck.. cus its super heavy.. and big.. and heavy.. very very heavy.

and i must say this IS a kickass mod! i hope seeing more from you

almost 4got to upload the walkable version LOL

Even less useful post, because you didn't even show enthusiasm for the mod at hand.

Anyways, atom group is the way to go. Think of it like being on thin ice. The more weight you disperse, the less likely you are to break through the ice and sink.

When this is fixed I'll be interested to see how well it climbs hills: Ivan's manages only just and it's an awful lot shorter than this monster.

I learnt a lot about atomgroup theory here, thanks :wink:

as well.. as your one walks, mine walks better now.

ImprovisedWeapons.rte.zip

doesnt eat terrain, still needs a bitchload of tweaking but it can walk. its actually pretty good at hills now, i just need to get it better at flat ground :P

ScreenDump005.png

obviously needs more work but you'll see the difference footgroups changed drastically :)

EDIT: fixed! needs a bit more tweaking but i think i have a good base limbpath here. open up actors/tank/actor.ini and replace the left limbpath with this baby :D
Code:
   LWalkLimbPath = LimbPath
      PresetName = Tank Walk Path Left
      StartOffset = Vector
         X = 18
         Y = -16
      StartSegCount = 0
      AddSegment = Vector
         X = -15
         Y = 21
      AddSegment = Vector
         X = -15
         Y = 8
      AddSegment = Vector
         X = -15
         Y = 2
      SlowTravelSpeed = 3.5
      NormalTravelSpeed = 8.5
      FastTravelSpeed = 10
      PushForce = 32000

yay! as i said, needs some tweaking, but its not bad :)

Well, I took your code and messed with it and came up with something I think. I made the foot groups 100 pixels (yes, 100) wide, and then made it so that left legs are attached to the body in the same place, rather than having them spread out like you did. Then I did the same for the right legs. I set it up just so that the feet hit a bit in front of the tank's body when its walking. I also moved the legs two pixels lower, so it'd lift itself up a bit more. I didn't do anything directly to the walk paths.

Also, I made the tank lighter. The body is now 600, the turret 200, and the gun 100. For the most part, you shouldn't have problems with it getting blown over. Honestly, there's problems inherent in the stability of an ACrab that can't be fixed with even the most excessive amounts of weight, so you're better off lighter than heavier to avoid terrain rape.

Oh and going back to the foot groups: I looked at your code and you way overcomplicated it. All you need is a thin horizontal line, with some "prongs" here and there so the feet will catch the terrain. You seemed to have unnecessary lines going all over the place.

having a look now, but the one that i have doesnt rape terrain at all. the footgroups are like that to smooth the damage they do to terrain, but ill test out your rendition and if its working better than mine i'll be singing your praise for a while, darlos. 100 atoms is a ♥♥♥♥♥ to place.

edit: seems to walk pretty well, even on harder ground. i think ill smooth out the sides of the atomgroup, to make whatever terrain it puts dents in a nicer shape, but the massive massive footgroup seems to have helped. thank you darlos :D

Eh, it was just a bunch of copying and pasting, and then changing the numbers for each atom entry. Not too awfully time-consuming.

I guess you'll be singing my praise then?

i shall be, expect some credits.
im redoing the footgroups to some degree though, and the leg positions, because of what you one does to hills. it should be a mix of mine and yours, using bits of your atom code out of sheer laziness. they'll probably be 40 atoms wide at most though, so as to not rape hills violently. im glad you had a look at it though.
god i wish there was an atomgroup editor.

At least in Darlos' version (only one I tried), the jetpack is offcenter and causes the tank to do flips.

it is in mine too, im going to fix it. it will still probably cause a bit of lift-rotation because that is handy to get over troublesome bumps and to stomp on enemies :)

I'm not gonna re-read this entire thread, but I know what you can do.

Create a new bmp, 3x3, 1 visible pixel.

Create an Attachable with whatever mass, add GlobalAccScalar = -1

This means that pixel will go up.

Attach them spread out on your tank, so it cancels out most of the downward force of your tank.

If i'm right, This will mean your tank still be really heavy, so nothing shooting it will send it flying, and it wont push down as much... This might also make your tank fall more slowly, i'm not sure how it does the calculations...

Think of this as tying thousands of helium baloons to it, so it doesn't push down as much. You still wont be able to push it. I thought of this the other day for something else, and never got around to testing it.

yeah, only issue i have with that is it is the same as just lowering the gravity on the tank itself. it's working fine now, i'll release it once i have enough content in the rest of the pack done and all the gibs for this ♥♥♥♥♥ done.
