How to make this forum better
Lets try this again
Ideas to make this forum better. be mature and dont even think of flaming me or anyone else. This is the only warning your getting, 3 day ban to flaming or spamming. If you try to go around that ban you will be perma banned. Think before you post. it would be a good idea.

Re: How to make this forum better
- Employ more active moderators.
- Be stricter on ban dodgers and general forum idiocy.
- Encourage spelling and grammar.
That's a start.

1. New mods who are active and know the rules, who will do thier job no matter what. 2. Try to prevent people from dodging bans (i.e. multipule accounts).

That's a start. 1, Who? 2, If the mods would listin to that, sure 3, Really dont care, its nice to beable to read , but as far as grammer and spelling, as long as the point gets past, its ok. Il be the first to say i cant spell. whitty wrote: 1. New mods who are active and know the rules, who will do thier job no matter what. 2. Banning there username seams like it doesnt work anymore. Next to banning all free email sites.. including hotmail and gmail..

Re: How to make this forum better
As much as people will hate me for this, I'd offer moderate for you, and be sensible and listen to your instructions.
Feel free to ignore me though.
Edit: I withdraw this, due to IRC pressure form THOR.
Edit Edit: Discussion with THOR has produced an ok.
I offer to do my utmost to help by moderating once more.

Re: How to make this forum better
Let users delete their own posts. I mean, after a longer period of time.
Do NOT ban free email sites.

ProjectTHOR '08. I'd rather have an admin who can put together a sentence.

Re: How to make this forum better
James, the real thing you need to do is stop messing with the forum's social dynamics. You don't spend enough time here to know how things work in that sense, you should be the Tech Admin, and nothing else. Because you DO mess in the forum dynamics, you've gained the ill will of a lot of people here.
We need an admin to deal with the social problems of the forum, one who has good judgment and can appoint mods (and possibly change the forum, but that probably delves a bit deeper than a simple question of power) as they see fit. I think that's Alenth's role, but he either doesn't care enough to use it or doesn't have the power to do so as I've explained.
As for the users, take the time to type out proper sentences. Capitalization and punctuation. Also, learn to ignore blatant flames. Flame + flame = bad.
...
I'm done now.
EDIT: Also what venn said, but make sure moderators' locks override users' unlocks (if they get the ability to do so).

Re: How to make this forum better
Let users have the ability to lock their own topics, too.
That seems like it would save the moderators a lot of time when people howl "LOCK TOPIC PLOX"
And plus, it would probably clean up the forum more.

ProjektTHOR wrote: What really needs to happen is a Forum Constitution, more or less. A discrete, explicit creation of specific jobs with specific tasks and functions.
Then in addition to that, a User Bill of Rights should be created to outline things that users should always be able to do, regardless of who is a moderator.
Then there needs to be a Forum Code of Law. These things need to be explicit lists of no-nos, and accompanied punishments.
VERY good idea.

Re: How to make this forum better
Okay, people. We all know how much you hate WJ, and that he has made some major screw-ups in the past. We all know that. He's actually been a mighty fine fellow recently, and has done nothing wrong. As much as we all like elections, we really don't need them right now. The forum is returning to order, and all the poor man's trying to do is speed the process up. Don't beat him while he's down, he's done what he can to fix the mistakes. As much as I hate taking sides, and as much as I disagree with some of WJ's past decisions, I'm siding with him on this one, he doesn't deserve to have his topic butchered. Please. Give him a break and get on topic. And so there aren't any loopholes, from this point onward, the topic is "What can we do with the forum and its staff to make it better?" If you want to replace WJ, or anybody, give a good reason, not an election campaign. And after that has been given, I DON'T want to see any replies saying "Yeah, vote for so-and-so". This is for individual replies, not cheerleading. Side note: If you want to become admin, I would suggest one thing: don't ever have been banned or warned before. Anyway, ontopic, I think we should decide who is valuable to the staff, and give them certain admin powers. That way if one isn't on the others can take care of things such as signatures, avatars, language filters, etc. and also respond to any complaints users might have almost 24/7 (no guarantees for those who like to quote)

Re: How to make this forum better
Quote: Your suggestions are way too arbitrary. WHo chooses who gets a moderator position? What are the requirements? How do we prevent people from being promoted due to cronyism?
This cronyism is a common problem for WizardJames. He seems to feel he is entitled to op or mod or admin whoever he pleases when he feels the need.
He may or may not be doing things to fix the forum, but his fixes have been half-assed and impotent.
What needs to happen is more explicit guidelines for everything. Things you can do. Things you can't do. Things you should do to get moderator status. Things you shouldn't do as a moderator.
The problem with this forum is ARBITRATION. The entire forum is decided on--nothing. Primarily James's whims.
Thats what causes problems. Not me, not protesting, not boycotting or complaining.
Arbitrary nature does.

Re: How to make this forum better
Et ita id incipiet.
I'd thought myself as the "Community Admin" since I was given adminship whoever long ago it was that happened, but lately I've sort of separated from that because noone ON THE STAFF says that I am needed to do anything. No moderators have asked me about rules or bans or whatever else goes on here. I've been responsible for bannings of Daman and Seleia, as well as the mass banning a while back that removed Maximdude and Punisher along with a few others from the community. I was also one of the forces that got THOR demodded on several occasions, as well as helping in his complete removal, if you don't understand why I had that stance on THOR back then, then you weren't paying enough attention.
I'm willing to do what I have to, but it's irritating to modify an entire ruleset for DRLFF, then have WJ throw it out because it's in a thread rather than on it's own page linked at the top of the forum. I tend towards being impartial and doing what I am told, but anymore I don't even know WHY seleia is being banned, I wasn't even told the reasons for Pyro's demodding and ban, I realise that he abused IRC power, but since when does that get you banned?
Whatever, I might start doing something if I am actually given cable to do what I am able to for the forum. Right now my admin powers are somewhat limited, and those that I do have are not being called on by anyone.
