Post Help me make my computer into a beast.
Ok Master Pimp is back in business I got a new (cruddy) computer this thing has a huge tower case it says I have an AMD-K7(tm) Processor 499 MHz,256 MB of RAM. I think windows is reporting the processor speed wrong or something because it runs quite fast. I have yet to try CC on this computer but my grandmothers computer runs at 1.6 GHz 256 MB Ram and it cant even play you tube vids but this comp can. So could someone please find out the actual speed of my processor for me. Now for the part that I need help on I plan on investing 120$ on a new flat screen monitor because this current one humms and the picture is all shaky after I purchase the monitor what should I upgrade first the motherboard? Are all cases universally made so they fit all motherboards? Any specific Motherboard I should try to get. Money is not a factor I have plenty of time to make cash.

By the way the computer is a Compaq PRESARIO 5837 I don't think everything in it is stock.

[Edit] Could someone move this into computer help if that section still exists I cant seem to find it.

I just need the case and I can make it good I am gonna replace everything inside I just need a new Motherboard will any motherboard fit in the case or do I need a newer case? Hell I can even take the front part off if I need to.

Now any recommendations for a Motherboard and processor?

Screw buying a new computer I want to build one because I suck at saving large amounts of cash when I build one I can save somewhat small amounts of cash over time and buy things part by part rather than save up a large amount and get tempted into buying things.

The model was in the first post you don't need to know any thing else because I am only using the case all parts will be removed and replaced with top of the line parts.

I'd start with this: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.as ... =C&topnav=

It's what helped me on my way to freedom.

Weren't you the one that said you were going to buy a pimped $3000 pc from cybewrpowerpc, because you were a pimp and you had to earn expensive things?

You need to find out what case standard the Presario was. Micro ATX, Full ATX, AT, etc.

Then you need to go to a pc parts website and browse what products in your case/board size they have.

It absolutely makes a difference. Additionally, the presario might have several ports in the rear manufactured to a specific board. The problem using OEM materials is that they are usually build for only one specific piece of hardware.

Just buy a new stupid case, its only like 50-75 for a half-decent one.

Yeah I do need expensive things and they are more expensive (Not cost wise but morally) when I build them myself.

@THOR
Ok I will go out and buy a new case.

I'm sorry to make a suggestion like that, because I understand how important cost is when building a PC from parts.

Unfortunately, cases just vary so much that you almost haave to buy a case to fit your motherboard (or vise versa, if you are not smart).

So are you saying I should buy the board before I get the case?

That sounds genius!

Absolutely. Find a board that supports the hardware you want to get, then get a case that will fit around it.

Think of it like buying a car. Get a car that has the stuff on the inside you want, customized how you like, then worry about the color.

I thought that you could just buy a board that's the same form factor and it would work.
ALSO (from IRC):

<ProjektTHOR> but the standards dont dictate where outputs go, either

Uh, actually if the motherboard should come with a panel for the ports. So they don't need to be arranged the same way as in the old board. You just exchange the little metal panel that the ports stick out of.

Like to note that I said I wasn't totally sure about that.

My experience with third-party cases is that the back panel is not a part of the motherboard. The cases of the last two PCs I put together had the back panel as a non-removable part of the case itself, not the mobo.

Maybe I just need to buy newer cases -_-
