Well, honestly, it doesn't matter, since we have no way to manipulate the system or change anything that would matter (other than everyone commiting suicide, but that's something of a double-edged sword). Besides, if this was the Matrix, why would the robots spill all the secrets of it out for us like that? Reverse psychology?

Or maybe we are enslaved, but just in a totally different way and that's just there to distract us.

The way I see it, the matrix is a parallel to our uiniverse; a metaphor, if you will. In the matrix, our consciousness is placed into a fabricated/simulated "body" that only exists in cyberspace, which is a "place" that the robots created. In our universe, our consciousness, or "souls", are placed within our bodies, which were created by a higher being, into a place where these bodies exist (also created by said higher being). This higher being created the whole earth, and reality as we see it. the robots crafted reality as the people in the matrix experienced it. So, I see a lot of similarities to the movie from our own lives.

Although my metaphor ceases to apply when you get to the part about using us as organic batteries. I'm pretty sure that's not why a higher being created us.
