 LAN/online?

Should there be LAN/online capabilities in the final game?

lan would kick ass, but I dont have many freinds around here that actually play. Or can you play anyone using lan? Also I prefere the idea of diff weapon sets and then a test one for any mods. Also if it does happen chances are data will or is saving it for the finished game.

If LAN was implemented then Hamachi could be used to play online. Though there would be no main lobby.

Anyway, this is how I would implement LAN: I would have the clients calculate the physics as well as the server. Particles would be assigned new categories, such as scenery and terrain. Scenery particles would be any small amounts of particles that were not lethal (eg. dirt flying when a ship crashes). Particles from rockets, ships, diggers, weapons, etc. would only be sent server->client as "actor ### fires weapon class ### in direction ### at coordinates ###" and "weapon shot ### hits actor ### at coordinates ###". The server would constantly send through thrusting directions, weapon firing, actor movement starting, etc. It would only actually send through an updated version of all actors, terrain, etc. say every half a second. That way it wouldn't lag incredibly but would still be playable and accurate.
