They're just rendered. Nothing special. Etc.

Blah, it looks cool, but it could take hours to render a frame of that.

Nice, nice. Though it's still not real enough for me. Too "solid", I suppose.

It's not just rendered. The guy who made this makes programs that simulate this and then render the result. They just render it so that it looks good. But the fire was dynamically generated.
Here are some more:

And the website of the guy who did most of them:

I hope they have fire physics in games soon! I wonder if they're using anything like that for Mercenaries 2...

Lul, looks nothing like real fire. Real fire flickers rapidly, and the smoke from real fire goes from silky smooth to the smoke you think of very fast.

Yeah. And it's more like a billowing sheet rather than something that you can actually see through (at least, to a small extent).
But it's still an excellent simulation. Kinda like Ocarina of Time was picture-perfect back in the day.
Not really.

No not really but it's damn good looking.
Games are starting to look pretty damn close to real life.

Grass in crysis is shitty. Etc. Notice how there's no shrubbage where there is in the real thing's grass?
Also, if he makes programs that can do this, download link or it never happened.

Games will never simulate true enviroments.
mainly since they can't get scent/touch/feel etc.
