EVENTS:

Looking for other clothes and finding none, Klimt puts on the robe, picks up his Coffin and heads out. Another maid guides him through more corridors and elevators, until they reach the medical ward.

The place is sprawling, and fully covered in white tiles. Through glass walls, he sees undead being operated on by strange machines, from simple zombies having their mouths sewn shut and stomachs sloppily modified, to large brutes being made from multitudes of body parts, with huge cleavers for hands and meat hooks hanging off their backs. He follows the maid into a quieter wing, where better-preserved zombies receive augments and masks to become maids and butlers.

Finally, they reach Emilia's room. It is similar to what a normal hospital room would look like, except for the spider-like, multi-armed steel device hanging from the ceiling. It seems to be carefully undoing the girl's abdomen stitches, while displaying her vital signs on a green-tinted CRT monitor. She's still unconscious, but seems somehow more relaxed as she lays on the surgical bed.

EVENTS:


Désirée smiles as the rest of the group finishes up, then claps once again. A small, chantilly-topped cupcake is place in front of each of them.

Désirée: "Of course. I'll have the maids lead you to your quarters as well. Just please, do try out the dessert, oui? It's quite rare for me to have someone else taste-test my new recipes. I'm sure you'll find it... Delicious."


Meanwhile, Klimt takes a seat by the bed, and watches Emilia be operated on. The machine has turned her over, and is now neatly removing her external lungs, suturing their bases afterwards. Seems like she'll look a bit more human after this.

It's, pretty good! There's an unusual taste to the topping, something you can't quite put your finger on, but it's very pleasant. A bit oily, however.

Désirée: "So! What did you think?"

Curie: "Unit disapproves of such richly prepared foods. Too unwieldy and perishable for an army on the march.

However. Unit cannot deny their delectable flavour, and hopes such a trend will continue. OPERATOR Désirée added to Unit Curie's approved user list."

Désirée: "My, my. I'm hardly worthy of such praise~"




Meanwhile, the machine stops, its visor turning to look at Klimt. Words begin to appear onscreen.

OVERRIDE APPROVED. BRAINMASS CONNECTED. PLEASE DESCRIBE DESIRED MODIFICATION.

Désirée: "Oh. Well, back to the drawing board, I suppose.

I have a small dairy operation set up, you see. My current objective is making sow's milk taste the same as normal cow milk from the old world, since I've had no luck finding any surviving bovines.

I was expecting you to not be able to tell the difference..."

She looks genuinely dejected now, absentmindedly munching on her own cupcake.

Désirée: "Hah, I'm glad you think so. Even a failure can be pleasant, in a way.

Also, ma cherie, asking a lady her age? I thought you'd know better~

I kid, I kid. I guess all of us have been around since the end, haven't we? But yes, I've been awake for most of that time."
