Post Re: Ad Infidium (Roll 270) - Ascension
"You may know that there is a defensive tower on the road to Teleiat, but during our recon tour we determined that it was a site of major archaeological interest; a preserve from before the last corruption. There was a leviathan-killing machine buried there, entombed in a massive clot of ancient corruption that turned it against all civilization. It's clawing out of the ground as we speak, and Teleiat is mustering some forces to engage it. That thing absorbed multiple barrages of heavy offensive magic, and we aren't sure if their response will be enough. If it is let loose it may grow even stronger, posing a threat to Magusalto far graver than the light construct we were hunting for earlier.

That is all I can report. I am at the Spiral's service again. We have new intelligence also on the nature of Negation - here I hold a weapon based on a witch queen, Stahlnacht. It armors me in its flesh. Both I and these witches are apparently of a space-manipulating breed. I can capture and hold constructs in a spatial pocket now. This will be useful.

If I might make one request now, keep me and Tabi together. We work well as a unit."

"Woah, wait, I'm not a demon!"

The monster pauses for several seconds.

”INCORRECT TARGET. REACQUIR-”

The entire thing suddenly stretches vertically, almost twice its original height, before exploding into fine dust a split second after. In the dark of the trees, you see an orange spot, taking a bit to realize it’s a part of a much larger, red-eyed creature. Its outline becomes fuzzy and soon vanishes.

Komen: ”I will grant your request for you to continue working with Tabi. She was your recruiter and partner for some time, it makes sense to keep the two of you together.

Your Negation abilities and Stahlnacht could possibly be used to further our plans. We will look into that later, if you would be willing.

As for the current situation, we’re barely managing as it is with our current number of units.”

He takes a moment to think. Someone else in the room speaks up.

???: ”What about Sarya? We don’t really need her as an asset right now, and this sounds like the perfect job for her. She’s probably itching to blow something up, too.”

Komen: ”I was hoping to keep her here for an emergency, but I suppose her strength is needed now and elsewhere. Call her here, along with Tabi.”

???: ”Yes sir.”

After a bit of waiting, Tabi emerges from the stairwell with another chirop.

The newcomer is dressed like other members of the spiral - dark clothing made for moving quickly without restriction, but she seems to lack a gauntlet. Instead, she has some sort of mechanical device on her back with cables and pulleys, a large quiver of arrows, and some sort of sleek construct strapped to her right forearm.

The two snap a salute.

Komen: ”Sarya. The commotion to the west is an ancient construct rising out of the earth, some sort of ‘leviathan killer’. You, Tabi, and Kleigg will see about weakening it, taking it out if possible. Return here if the mission proves impractical with your current resources. You will move out immediately.”

Sarya: ”Yes sir.”

She looks at you and Tabi.

Sarya: ”Looks like we’re a team. Let’s go.”

He picks up Raze and P’orihc, and your group leaves the tunnel and the facility grounds, hunkering down in a depression in the fields.

Blue Mage: ”So, we’ve discovered what Project Heartstone is. Teleiat collected a bunch of test subjects, all girls, and is using some method to force their spirit to incubate more spirits, and then they’re trying to fuse together spirits that have useful abilities, and then make those produce more copies.

The key to the project is a component they call the Heartstone - some exotic form of AM that allows the spirit to use its abilities without setting up individual construct components to handle tasks.

The thing you encountered in there was probably one of the girls.”

Horoma: ”Just cleaning up the yard a bit.”

Tuhota and Miimas descend the stairs and come over to the table, and the game box’s contents are quickly pulled out. Some pencils and stacks of paper slips, and a few decks of cards.

Tuhota: ”Hey Horoma! Miimas and Kyeltziv are playing, you should join us!”

Horoma: ”... Fine. I’m going to put my shovel away first.”

The doll heads up stairs, soon returning to join everyone at the table.

Tuhota: ”Okay, here’s how it works! First, we pick someone to be the Reader. The Reader picks a card at random, reads it aloud, and everyone writes something relating to the card. Then, you give the paper slips to the Reader and they read all the papers, and we go clockwise from the reader to guess who wrote what!

The Reader doesn’t make a guess since they might be able to tell who wrote what based on handwriting but the reader still writes an answer. If someone gets properly guessed, their turn for guessing is skipped!

Guessing correct answers gets you points, and whoever has the most points wins!”

Miimas: ”So, who wants to be the reader first?”

Tuhota: ”I’ll do it!”

Everyone gets several slips of paper and a pencil, and Tuhota takes a card off of the deck.

Tuhota: ” ‘Stuff that creeps you out.’ ”

Miimas: ”So we just write a single thing for the topic?”

Tuhota: ”Yup!”

Everyone starts writing.

You write your answer on the slip of paper and pass it to Tuhota, everyone else quickly doing the same.

Tuhota: "Alright! Stuff that creeps you out!

Crossdressers!
Insects!
Regenerating Flesh!
Reproduction!

Miimas, you're up!"

Miimas: "Um. Is insects Horoma?"

Horoma: "No."

Tuhota: "You did a wrong guess, so then it's the next person's turn to start guessing!"

Horoma: "... Insects is Tuhota."

Tuhota: "Nope! Your turn Kyeltziv!"

Your group moves North, on the edge for any other beasties.

Arriving at a small clearing, everyone takes a moment to enjoy the relative safety.

A cabin of sorts is in the middle of the clearing, and you can see smoke rising from the stone chimney.

"Pleased to meet you, Sarya. Let's get going. How are your armaments?"

Sarya: ”Long range and explodey, not great for city fighting. I have more, precise, things, but so does everyone else.”

Your trio leaves the tower and starts heading back towards where the watchtower used to be. Sarya pulls the device from her back, and you see that it’s some sort of complex bow.

Image

Sarya: ”The thing here on my arm is a little heat printer, rune-based. Instead of ink, it just scorches small pieces of paper shaped like fletchings that have a string on ‘em.”

A quick sizzling sound emits from the device, and it spits out a piece of card stock. Black runic markings cover the surface and two pieces of string stick out from the front.

Sarya: ”The printer also has a feature to tie the strings to an arrow. Then I just dump some mana into it and fire.”

The three of you reach a point where the site of the incident is visible - a massive crater is in the ground, and specks of light zip through the air, missing a massive, fast-moving… Thing. That’s all you can really see in the dim light of the night, just a large dark shape moving around much faster than it should be capable of, wiping out squads of Teleiat’s mages with gouts of white flame and earth-rending swipes.

Sarya: ”Well, that looks terrifying.”

Holding the bow in her left hand, she nocks an arrow while the paper tag is still grasped by her fingers. The strings loop themselves through a hole in the back of the arrow and then tie close.

The bow fires almost silently, the only sound you hear is the air swishing from the bowstring and the arrow zipping out. Looking into the distance, you see a massive ball of light that envelops the beast, expanding into a miniature sun and vaporizing the grass in the area before the shockwave hits you and rips your hair around inside your helm and momentarily deafening your ears.

As the flames from the explosion clear, you see a nice crater in the earth, with the dark beast still standing, completely intact.

Sarya: ”Damn, that’s tough. I’ve got four more of those shots left, but not sure I wanna waste ‘em if that thing’s just gonna tank it.”

The beast starts moving again at its normal speed, continuing to massacre the chirop forces still working to bring it down after Sarya’s shot.

Looks like there’s not really a way to find out if your friends are here. You decide to leave town and head North, slowly practicing your sword swings in the air. It’s a bit difficult to tell if you have the edge aligned, it being dark and all as well as not having an actual target.

Occasionally you think you hear the sound of a girl - crying, laughing, talking. When you strain to listen, it just sounds like it becomes fainter and deeper in the woods.

You stay on the clear path North until you arrive at a large clearing. There seems to be a village to the east of the clearing, and a group of large buildings to the north.
