The shadows in the city shift as the red sun climbs high in the sky, directly over top your party. A loud but whispering voice fills the air, seeming to come from everywhere.

"Tell me where, and I will take you there."

You Spirit Lance yourself, recoiling in the pain of attacking your own spirit and getting concerned looks from Miimas and Tuhota.

It feels like your possession has a bit more wiggle now!

The world as the players know it:

Who from?

Andrew: A signal runner from Vranhal. Kyeltziv has made it back to Vranhal safely with his mission complete. Lord Elizabeth commands you to head towards the Heartstone facility to assist P’orihc and Ki’stha. The message also includes the details of Project Heartstone, but we more or less learned everything in the message from Belua.

"Understandable. So, what else has your research consisted of, if you don't mind me asking?"

Aandern: ”I have done a great deal of reading into old texts that concern witches, and visited the ruins of Fallbeil.

The ruins are to the south-west, the site of Lord Charlotte’s battle against the witch Fallbeil. It is slightly smaller than the city of Vranhal, with giant wrecked magic components littering the area. Scavengers often venture into the ruins to loot the remains, but most fall victim to the random corruption in the area.

Corruption, it is when unstable energy disrupts magic sequences, mutating them to either fail or to perform some other task. Most corruption is random, and simply makes constructs dysfunctional while severely damaging living things that are capable of magic. Witch corruption is goal-oriented, mutating magic to suit a witch’s need. Only witch queens are able to infect things with witch corruption.

Witch cores are able to regenerate the entire witch given enough time, while a witch queen focus can regenerate the entire queen. Their cores are also much larger on the inside, due to space manipulation. A witchling’s core is about the size of a bedroom and grow in size as they mature, with queens being as large as a city. The regeneration speed with a core varies greatly, from the type of witch to the amount of mana they have in their reserves. Some witches will attempt to regenerate as soon as possible, visibly rebuilding themselves over the course of a week or two. Others will simply wait in their cores, building up mana until they have enough to completely reform their bodies in a handful of seconds. A queen’s focus supposedly regenerates the entire witch over several months to a year. There have, not been any attempts to regrow queens, so there is nothing detailed on that.

That information was gathered from books, however. The first-hand information I have is the society that witch queens establish, a pyramid system with ranks of witches. Lower ranked witches only mature and are promoted if there is room in the upper ranks, else they remain the same. Their rank is equal to their power.

The single Matriarch, or Queen, is at the top. Her massive core serves as the safe haven for the younger witches, and she fights off major competitors to her outside-world territory and is responsible for expansion of the territory..

Seers are the next, usually numbering in the single digits. They command lesser witches outside of the core-nest and perform the usual defense of territory. If the Matriarch should fall, one of the Seers will mature further and take her place.

Magi, or Magus singular, they are the primary combatant. They will attack and defend alone or in a group, usually by command of a Seer or Matriarch.

Servants are the lowest functional rank, they perform minor tasks like construction and tending to the youth. They are normally not fighters, but are quick to lash out at threats and will band together to attack or defend if a higher rank is not in the area.

Fledgelings are the lowest confirmed rank of witch. They are occasionally seen outside of the nest, when they are becoming acquainted with the world. They are incapable of causing serious damage, and generally avoid conflict.

It is possible that there is a lower rank of witch that exists only inside of the nest, a newly-born witch, but no one has confirmed yet. There are also theories of a possible Overlord rank, a witch that dwarfs the power of queens and rules over them, but that is only conjecture.

The most common witch ranks seen are servants and magi, though Poker was a deviant fledgeling when I found her. She is about the strength of a Magus right now.”

Vandolf: "Ah..."

A mirage surrounds your party, blurring the surrounding cityscape into oblivion before bright light floods your vision. The mirage clears, and you see the real sun and the lush grassy fields. Hexestahl is back in your hands.

Looking around, you seem to be a short distance south of the tower - or what used to be the tower. Now there’s just a deep, circular hole in the ground that leads to blackness, the surrounding area pockmarked with small craters and burnt grass.

Ettiin: ”Hold!”

Turning around, you see several chirop on the hills further away - the guards of the tower.

Ettiin: ”Get away from there! It’s going to try to climb out again!”

The ground trembles.

"Ugh... Spirit magic ain't all fun an' games."

You give your spirit a good wiggle, trying to figure out which parts are more prone to the wiggle.

Feels like there’s a ‘core’ that’s firmly planted and will take a great deal of effort to move, and some edges that are less important and less, rooted. A spirit toe, perhaps. You can sacrifice a toe, right?

Miimas: ”Food’s probably done, I’ll take it out. Tuhota, go set some plates.”

Miimas slips on some protective mittens and pulls the trays of fish out while Tuhota places three plates and sets of utensils on the table.

Tuhota: ”FINALLY.”

She immediately starts chowing down, only to gurgle her food in her mouth from the pain of the heat, carefully dropping it back onto a spoon and blowing on it.

Miimas: ”Well, enjoy.”

A loud thump is heard, coming from upstairs, followed by the sound of things falling to the ground.

Tuhota: ”Geez going weirg gings agang.”

No time to make this pretty. Wielding Hexestahl, it gets the idea that you need a new suit. Your old armor expands and explodes into black plates and shreds of flesh as a new suit grows under it.

Running over to the hills where the other chirop are, Tabi and Kura following behind and Vandolf ahead, you climb over and then get low on a grassy mound, Ettiin nearby.

Vandolf: "Leave any for me, Ettie?"

Ettiin: ”Saved a big one for you.”

The ground shake violently as the earth around the hole start to rise.

Ettiin: ”Looks like it’s pushing something else up! Give it another barrage!”

The chirop mages cast their magic, a storm of bright flaming spheres and orbs of lightning raining towards the hole and dropping down. A barrage of explosions is heard, but the ground continues to rise as the thing below pushes its way up.

Ettiin: ”It’s not stopping! Fall back!”

The chirop fall back, leaving you, Vandolf, and Tabi on the hill as the monstrosity roars and claws its way to the surface.

Tabi straps her interface brick to her left wrist and then attaches a small object to the end. She then pulls a hefty leather-bound book out and opens it. No, not a book. A binder, each page with sleeves that hold a paper tag with writing on it. Slinging the binder’s carrying strap over a shoulder, she holds her left hand out in front of her, and dozens paper tags fly out of the binder and float in a grid in front of her.

Tabi: ”Might wanna take a few steps back.”
