Lauffeuer: ”I suppose it would be pointless to fight when Lucida is not at full strength. I will leave you, for now.”

The witch slowly takes a few steps back, the flames in the area quickly going out.

Lauffeuer: ”Your weapon has the ring of a queen, the children will attempt to seek you out. Should you harm any of them, I will not hesitate to crush you.”

There’s a sudden implosion of air, and the witch is gone. Andrew lets out a breath of relief.

Andrew: ”I didn’t think I’d ever come face to face with a witch queen, much less survive an encounter.”

Lucida: ’Ring of a queen?’ Some sort of witch signal?

Eventually, you reach a section where there’s a vertical tunnel above, complete with handholds to climb. A grate with faint light streaming through is at the top.

Could go up, or continue forward.

The gate shamans nod, and move to form a large circle.

Bauen: ”We will tell you when it is safe to traverse.”

Holding their hands up, they remain still. Several seconds pass without happening.

And then a tiny point of light appears in the center of their ring, cackling with energy and incinerating the grass. The light slowly grows and turns into a black void, the occasional whisp of light and small twisted beast leaping out and running into the woods. The gate then becomes a perfect image of a field, warping a few times before stabilizing.

Bauen: ”It is safe to cross - do so quickly.”

You pop a Locate up above and forward. The forward one reveals nothing, but the one above picks up a single entity. It feels vaguely human, but you're not completely sure. Whatever it is, it seems to be idling around a bit away from the grate, it's possible that you might be able to ascend to the ground unnoticed. Maybe.

Lucida: Well, I've always wanted to have kids. Wait...

The two of you head to Fluustern, traveling some distance before Andrew holds up his hand.

Andrew: Something's coming this way.

Soon enough, a pair of red eyes appear from the darkness of the forest, and a creature slightly shorter than you reveals itself. It looks similar to the witch queen, but lacks the orange flare, and only has two red eyes.

It looks at you quizzically with its head slanted sideways, and vocalizes in some distorted, static-like bird call.

Lucida: Do we tell it to go away or something?

Although the First Pinch didn't last long, many spirits were able to analyze it and attempted to replicate it - this led to higher tier spirits, Fourths and higher, creating pinches from the otherworld into this world, and their abilities first manifested in this world as space manipulation. I do not know a name for the root of the ability, but it has some similarities to Gates. Magic disruption, teleportation, creating pockets of space, all have the same root.

So, to answer your question - yes, there exists a root ability, but I do not know much of it. Perhaps you could ask a friendly witch, they are well-known space manipulators.' "

The witchling vocalizes some more, in a tone that sounds almost questioning.

Andrew: It's confused? Asking a question? You're an unknown - it's asking what you are. Oh, it also seems to be trying to translate.

Witchling: "Who? Who?"

It does this while pointing one of its clawed fingers at you.

It lets out another chirp, this one starting out shrill and wavering, before dropping to a low, smooth tone.

Andrew: That was its name. Means something like, dangerous sneaking? Hidden danger? I don't know their language structure, the shrilly high tone was 'danger', the low tone was 'sneaky' or 'deceptive.'

Lucida: Something like a trouble maker, maybe?

Andrew: Maybe.

It looks at you.

Witchling: "John."

It turns to Andrew.

Witchling: "Ann, jeroo. Andrew."
