With the sheathed sword coming at you, you realize that you don’t have enough time to track it and redirect its course if you’re not prepared, and do your best to evade the attack, and the one after, with impulse evasions. The third hit however, you don’t dodge, and receive a nice broken rib or two delivered via length of blunted steel.

The librarian brings out a lamp, and you continue reading.

The first phase of training as a Venari warrior is “basic” conditioning. Running around the city several times non-stop, swimming across the West Anri, weight lifting, standing still and enduring impacts from a wooden pole, various obstacle courses.

After that is skill training - standing in a small circle where you’re free to move, but have to dodge a barrage of pole swings and blunt arrows. Unarmed fighting, armed fighting with swords, maces, polearms, hammers, bows. Surviving in the wilderness, making shelter, hunting for food, obtaining clean water. Dealing with magic users, practicing through “full-contact” fights.

Next is war training. Large-scale fights where you’re outnumbered, scenarios where you’re dealing with coordinated mages, countering various formations, mock ambushes, stalking targets over land and water, spying, assassinations.

At this point, the trainees are considered “Inexperienced” Venari warriors. To earn the title of Wolf, they have to take part in war or go on several missions that often take place far away, ranging from escort missions to mercenary work to exterminations and assassinations to defence and rescue.

After Power Flowing up, you wait, hoping you have the upper hand in speed this time - and you do.
Dodging another sword swing with a mana-boosted Impulse Evasion, you counter with a halberd strike that slams into Linna’s powerful guard, and then you follow up with a Falling Star, this time missing her completely as she does her hybrid parry and sidestep to avoid the attack.

The two of you find a window to get a good view of the ground below, locating one without too much difficulty. It’s nearly pitch black outside, the only light from the stars and the moon being blocked by the towers of the city.

Tabi: ”Negative fabric, below-zero level. Sounds like some sort of advanced new AM.

Anyways, looks dark enough to move around safely, and you can cover us from telepaths.”

You look around for some place that would be related to your newly found interest in swords, even if it’s a bit late.

Taking a trip around the magic-lamp-lit city, you find a store that sells specifically one-handed dueling swords like rapiers and such, and another that’s a blacksmith shop. Both are closed at this hour of the night, but both buildings are two-storied, with the upper level most likely being the living quarters of the store owners. Surely they’d be kind enough to offer some help for the late-night enthusiast?

Your party, now with one additional member, heads towards Gabel, with Horoma and the newcomer providing light.

"Mind if i ask what you were doin' out here? not 'xactly the safest time t' be travellin'"

Chirop Green Mage ”I used to be in the Hastae, dropped out to do escort work for traders and other travellers, tends to pay better if you find the right clients. Our client hired ten of us to escort him to Fluustern, but that mummy-thing attacked and dropped most of us in a few seconds, so I guess that’s a paycheck I’m not getting. Name’s Tuhota, people usually just call me Toh.”

You safely make it to Gabel’s gates, the lit entrance with guards a welcoming sight at this time of night. The party enters the large town, streets lit with a mix of flame and magic lamps with the occasional lupus strolling.

Tuhota: ”So what’re you guys up to? You’ve got that box on your back, a fire mage human that’s a toddler, and a westerner chirop.”

You hand the lamp and book back to the librarian, thanking her, and then leave the library and search for the guard you talked to earlier. It occurred to you that the guard might not have the night shift, but luckily you find her in the same location.

Bridge Guard: "Why might the communications be down? You seem pretty interested in that."

She looks around, as if to see if anyone is nearby.

Bridge Guard: ”I’m not supposed to tell you since we’re trying to keep people from being antsy, but there were several attacks from some organized crime syndicates this morning. Communications, mana generators, certain production facilities. They normally don’t shoot that high - the Hastae’s pretty good at keeping their numbers low and taking ‘em out before stuff happens, but there seems to be an unknown organization that we don’t know about pulling the strings. Normally the criminals do low-key stuff like smuggling objects and information, not the kinds of things that put the entire city out of operation.”
