Even though the CSA wasn't recognized by foreign states, I can't really think of a better term to call it by than a country

Re: The Lounge
There's no permanent "meaning" or "purpose" to something that is inherently symbolic, it changes over time based on culture. For the same reason that waving a swastika flag around will get you detained in Germany, no matter how much you say that its origin is a Hindu peace symbol, people are not "ignorant" for saying that the modern display of the Confederate Flag is essentially saying you support the ideals of the Confederacy- namely human oppression and the bloodiest war in American history.

Re: The Lounge
I understand why governments ban symbols that have a controversial history, but I still disagree with them. In my opinion, sweeping the nasty stuff of the past under the carpet solves no problems. History should be something everyone can openly discuss and research. Learn from the mistakes of the past etc I don't see what people are hoping to accomplish by banning the CSA flag. What problems would it solve?

Re: The Lounge
You can discuss it and research about it and etc, no one is banning that. What they're banning is the flying of that flag and using it as a symbol, since it's come to represent some bad ideals and feelings that we as a country have hopefully moved beyond. There's sweeping history under the carpet and dismissing it, and there's preventing it from being repeated. This seems like more of an attempt at the latter, trying to prevent people from incubating the old "Deep South, can't take muh freedoms, ♥♥♥♥ northy twinkbags" sentiments.

Re: The Lounge
If there was a serious secessionist movement in the United States, do you think banning the flag of the CSA would discourage them? Would you say that the people who nowadays display CSA flags will stop doing it if it becomes illegal?

Re: The Lounge
Oh, I see.
Isn't it a bit redundant though? If the flag was banned, wouldn't those guys just look for another symbol for their movement? Shouldn't they just worry about banning associations and groups of people that promote those kind of things, instead of the flag itself?

Re: The Lounge
They're taking it out of government offices and various official effects (license plates, etc), nothing else. People can still buy them off the internet (just not Amazon and a few other big shops) or at their local confederate flag store. Honestly I don't see the big hubbub. The move is a symbolic one more than anything, going with the whole "we don't tolerate hating black people" thing. It won't stop anyone from acquiring a confederate flag, it won't stop anyone from flying them on their property, and it won't stop southern people from being obnoxious about their freedums and proud southern history.

See, what I don't get is that you need to kowtow to prove that you are not something, or don't believe in something.
It creates a problem with no solution, and obliges people to be at the mercy of another.
I don't like the presumption of guilt, hazing, and platonism happening here.

Exactly things like this was what I was thinking that would happen. Isn't it a bit too much? (I only read the header so I've no idea of the rest of the article, excuse my laziness :C)
