Does anyone play Battletech? I just got the starter set and I'm gonna teach myself the rules. It looks pretty sweet.

Sodium Chloride isn't that hard to remember. Ethanol is a bit harder. C2H6O, etc. But if you just think about the basic rules for a sec, it ain't that bad. Most of the basic chemistry isn't that bad.
I remember I got my hands on some BattleTech stuff when I was like, 10 years old. I never really figured it out. It seems cool but I heard that the game involves a lot of sitting in lakes in order to compensate for all the overheating.

"salty" is a colloquial expression meaning "visibly upset"
on a serious note it would also be nice if people stopped poisoning the lounge with their personal problems farewell announcements are fine if you act on them (or you're a recurring pillar of DRLFF)

Is that Stalker? I've been hearing good things about Stalker for a while, but I wasn't sure what kind of game it is or if I'd enjoy playing it.

Re: The Lounge
Yeah, Shadow of Chernobyl. Firefights in the beginning of the game are irritating because no one has accurate weapons and you'll have to empty a magazine to land a shot, but once you get a little bit more in and get to the enemies that have better guns, the firefights get a lot better.
It's fun without mods, but it's good to have a couple to change a few annoying things like durability.
Edit: and head bobbing
Edit2: As for the actual gameplay, you get a fairly large game world to ♥♥♥♥ around in. While it's not that sandboxy, there's plenty of time and room to explore, there're random roaming groups of bandits and other hostile (or friendly) groups to gun down and loot or help out if they happen to be in a fight.
Guns have durability (and there's no repairing in the vanilla game) and ammo has to be looted off dead bodies, found from the numerous but limited number of supply caches, or bought from traders.
As the screenshot I posted earlier shows, you usually ended up with a lot of guns to grab after a firefight, but usually not enough ammo to use them unless you save every loose round. You can make plenty of money selling the guns or doing quests to buy ammo though.

There's many good mods to choose from for STALKER, at the very least I always have atmosfear running. The oft recommended MISERY is actually totally ♥♥♥♥, horrendously overrated.

They're fairly standard first-person shooters, just with some supernatural and survival elements. Call of Pripyat is probably the best of the series, and the most freeform/sandbox-y - you have a main questline, but taking care of it should naturally lead you across the three areas. It doesn't hold your hand either though - if you want to get all the good stuff, you'll need to explore a lot.
The survival angle is fairly light by default - all you need to do is eat once or twice every game day and you're fine, aside from dealing with injuries with magical bandages/handy medical kits or using vodka to drown your sorrows lower your radiation level.
