I totally understand now. It was that girl Sanoa, the powerful telepath - she probably wondered why Kleigg seemed to have such an impenetrable brain and failed completely to notice her broadcasting.

Maybe their paths will cross later?

You reattempt your shelled fireball experiment. Well, you’re not sure if it could be properly called a kinetic shell, more like a stabilized shell of air, but whatever. You apply heat to the inside, and you feel the shell straining to contain the pressure, feeding the barrier more energy to maintain it. It’s an energy-exhaustive spell, and getting it to destructive levels would be extremely taxing. Additionally, while the pressure inside is contained, heat is still transferring through the shell and to the outside air.

P’orihc: "What would happen if I used the same pathic tendril as a channel for this fire magic? Is it even possible? Or would I just end frying someone's brain?"

Byrnolf: ”Tendrils are tendrils, they’re all the same. You won’t be able to fry anyone’s brain though. To actually get the heat to work inside someone, you have to send mana through the tendril and into the person, along with the spell to activate the heating. Most living creatures have a natural negation field that begins just under their skin, which detects large tendrils that deliver large amounts of mana and obliterate the spell contained. That means that instead of roasting the person from the inside out, you just fuel them with mana. The only reason why pathic magic works is because it uses such a minimal amount of mana, meaning a teeny tiny tendril, that it passes through the defenses and safely gets the spell through. The amount of mana that can move through the tendril isn’t enough to heat anything in the body past a point of a mild discomfort, which is why electricity is used to screw with the person’s mind.
There’re ways to get through the defense mechanism. Direct magic techniques they’re called, stuff assassins like to mess around with. You’ll have a hard time learning anything like that, they’re usually well-guarded secrets amongst high-position officials and professional assassins.
Oh, and healers, too. The mages you see that are advanced in bio magic are skilled defense breakers, and need to be else they can’t actually heal you. They usually have an enchantment placed on them that restricts them to non-offensive actions with direct magic to keep them from defecting from service and causing mayhem.”

With the disturbance and nullifying field gone, you try again to detect the forces working upon the lamp.

It’s a faint feeling, almost to the point where you might be imagining it, but you think there’s some sort of energy that the lamp is emitting, and you don’t mean light or heat. It’s the same feeling that the environment outside your nullification fields normally has, but slightly stronger.

You climb higher, moving up to what feels like the top quarter of the tree. You have no idea how tall the creature is and you’re not taking any chances.

It doesn’t sound like there are any footsteps below, nor any sounds that would suggest that something is climbing the tree. What you do notice is a ♥♥♥♥♥ of light on the forest floor, which then flares brightly and flies towards you. The light impacts the tree trunk a few feet above you, creating an explosion hits you with a wave of heat and leaves a smoldering, glowing crater in the wood. You really hope the tree doesn’t catch fire, but you really hope that the thing below doesn’t fire off another shot.

You create another tendril, though you’re not sure if “create” is the right word. It feels more like naturally extending your reach of magic, something made familiar with pathic magic practice. This time, it’s about a foot above your hand, radiating a point of heat hot enough to light up like a pebble-sized lamp.

"What would happen if I used the same pathic tendril as a channel for this fire magic? Is it even possible? Or would I just end frying someone's brain?"

You create an orb of fire, like a kinetic orb but fire instead of kinetics. Instead of the glassy appearance of a kinetic orb, this one is a glowing orange-yellow sphere. You fling the ball into the furnace with a “fwoosh” sound effect playing in your head, and then curse as an explosion launches embers towards you, several singing your arms.

Numerous other embers are scattered about the floor, all of them quickly darkening with a layer of frost forming over while Byrnolf gives you a disapproving glance.

Bynrolf: ”I think I should teach you guys how to cool things down first. Y’know, in case you start any fires.”

Cooling something is similar to heating it up, but requires a lot more effort, since you have to counter the random miniscule movement that makes up heat, as opposed to inciting it.

Byrnolf: ”Without dark magic, ice magic is difficult to pull off. Not many people are innate dark magic users, and it takes immense practice to be capable otherwise. Anyways, we can see about moving on to pure light magic now, if you’re without questions.”

You focus on the feeling deeply, slowly unraveling it from the threads of imagination and bringing it into reality. You don’t understand what mechanism of yourself that is detecting the force, all you know is that you can identify the energy and determine its source. Surely, a useful ability that will be useful later on.

A short moment later and a chirop appears, wandering around the area before noticing your existence. He has the same shirt and pants that you and some others were wearing, and in the back of your head you know that his name is Ki’stha.

Pressing the torch against the embers of the crater, you ignite the head and drop the lit torch down below, as the light won’t extend far enough with it just in your hand.

As the torch descends, you make out a beast that looks like a massive weasel with a long, dog-like face, pointed ears, and limbs like that of a rat. Its fur is rough and a brownish red color, with two long black whiskers that originate under the nose.

The moment the torch hits the ground, the beast vanishes in a blindingly fast blur of movement.

John creates a glowing yellow-orange orb over his palm and launches it into the furnace, resulting in a shower of embers exploding out and cursing as several of them hit his arms. Numerous other embers are scattered about the floor, all of them quickly darkening with a layer of frost forming over while Byrnolf gives John a disapproving glance.

You roam around town, exploring the place in its night-time setting. It doesn’t seem any different, other than being more empty and dark. On a side of town with fewer buildings, you see a man sitting on a bench under a lamp. You know his name for some reason, Kleigg.

Stabilization eh. Can I do that on like... my skin?
Be gentle with trying that, it could go wrong terribly easy.

"Why're dark magic users rarer than light?"

"Ki'stha! Would you like to spar for a round? Hand to hand? I may need to leave town soon - you as well, but I don't know your plans - and it is probably best that we get to grips with combat before encountering bandits on the road."
