Byrnolf: ”If there are active spells around, you can pump mana into them to boost ‘em up. It’s also a basic way to detect magic. Spells that are meant to be hidden are designed to not affect magic or mana around them, but they’ll still end up taking a pinch out of mana that flows around them. A more advanced technique of this is creating a sort of tendril so you can implant mana into things at a distance. If you’re keen, you can tell if some mana’s been leached off by a sneaky spell.”

You attempt to do as Byrnolf instructed. Kinetic is nebulous and immaterial as well as mana, should be something to work off of, right? Your first try ends with you quickly stopping yourself from assaulting the stone with a raw blast of kinetics, due to not catching yourself early enough. The second, you don’t release anything at all, catching yourself before you even built up mana.

It’s trickier than you thought, like changing a routine that’s become muscle memory. Third time’s the charm though, successfully charging up mana, skipping over forming it, and dumping it into the rock.

You take a few steps back, and then sprint forward and leap as far as you can before your body hits the water, using the momentum to hit top swimming speed instantly. The water is rough, but you propel yourself through with powerful limbs, making it to the other side without incident. After shaking yourself dry like the canine you are, you gaze south at the woods looming before you. The air is full of the songs of insects, masking any sign of a potential predator. The trees themselves blot out any starlight from reaching the ground beneath, leaving the dense underbrush a black hall of pillars.

The darkness awaits. Do you enter?

Closing your eyes, you breathe in and focus on your mind. Going through the basic process of casting, you feel the surge of mana and then let your mind catch itself from continuing the normal process, and immediately expel the mana into the stone. It’s a small dose, a habit from pathic magic that demands precision and not overwhelming force, but it fills the crude mana stone nicely.

You make an attempt to levitate the stone with kinetics, instead launching it a small distance into the air and catching it when it comes down. Seems like levitation is a very precise art.

Byrnolf: ”When a mana stone is destroyed, nothing happens. The mana is still contained in the fragments. Although they’re called stones, they can be solid, liquid, or gas. If a mana stone is completely obliterated in such a way that it is no longer capable of containing mana, the mana contained is released and spreads over an immense distance very quickly, becoming very thin. That’s called ambient mana. It’s all over the place, but unless if you’re a lupus or you’ve honed your senses extremely sharp, it’s undetectable. Using magic gives off tiny amounts of ambient mana due to lack of efficiency in the caster, and is generally hard to improve that efficiency. You can definitely lower it by blasting out raw mana.
As for what’s next, I can teach you more advanced Mana manipulation, maybe to the point where you can manifest substances like making your own mana stones, or we can move on to Fire.”

She tilts her head to the side and her eyes seem to gaze off, as if listening to something, but as far as you can tell, the two of you are the only people in the area. When she looks back at you and speaks, her voice is quiet and a bit shy.

???: ”Would you happen to be a magic practitioner of some kind?”

No turning back now, you tell yourself.

Carefully entering the woods, you keep your ears peeled for any sort of movement, a task made difficult by the scores of insects and the chit-chatter of small animals. The forest is black and blacker, with only your sense of touch aiding in navigating you through the dense foliage and around the immense trunks of trees.

You carefully move deeper into the woods, or rather, dark spooky forest, for several minutes without any change in activity around you. Until, a subtle crunch of leaves softly sounds from somewhere ahead of you, almost lost amongst the blaring night time chorus.

The fur on your body stands on ends, and something in the back and front of your mind is telling you that there’s a thing up ahead that you really don’t want to be close to.

Don't actually die, but try to levitate dammit.

Hug the nearest tree for cover. Listen to any further movement, trying to pinpoint the position of the creature.

You attempt to levitate the stone again, this time using a tiny amount of kinetics. It takes a lot of careful watching and tiny adjustments to vertical as well as horizontal forces, but you manage to keep the stone suspended in the air.

P’orihc: "Same doubt as John. If we can learn it by ourselves, I suggest we move on to fire."

Byrnolf: ”Other basic mana manipulation techniques you can probably figure out yourself, while learning to form substances might take a long time. I guess you might eventually figure it out on your own, so we’ll move on to fire.”

It’s a long rant, but the gist of it is that you have to practice over time to produce a sort of nodule in your head that is capable of managing the conversion of mana to thermics. Initially, the two of you are able to produce modest heat, enough to warm your hands, with your current capabilities.

Byrnolf: ”Before you try to produce anything hotter than that, I’ll have to warn you, fire burns indiscriminately. Any sort of raw flame blasting spell like a gout of fire or something will burn you as well as whatever you’re pointing it at. Generally, you’ll want to be casting fireballs, continuous projectile spells that release the effects on impact, like the kinetic orbs. Else, you’ll be spending half your energy keeping yourself cool from the heat. Practice your hand warmers a bit, get used to it, try not to blow your fingers off.”

The door leading to the front of the store opens with Kalob in the doorway.

Kalob: ”Closing time, I’m gonna head home.”

Byrnolf: ”Alright, see you tomorrow.”

The door closes as the boy leaves.

Well, you got stuff to practice.

You try to move as quickly and silently as possible to the nearest tree, a task that takes longer than you want due to the curtain of darkness. By the time you reach one and hug it for cover, there are more similar sounds, footsteps. They seem to be moving around you, maybe in a flanking position? Can this thing sense you in these conditions? You constantly move around the tree to put something between you and the thing, but it keeps moving around to try to get a clear space between the two of you.
