What gives this little guy character is his disproportionately large head. Really push yourself to make it cartoonishly large and as long as you do that I think the essence of the alien will come through.
Some other things I'd focus on are the roundness of his body/hips, the wideness of the eyes, and the low placement of the arms. There's probably not enough room to represent them like in the picture, so maybe just have them splayed outwards?
Edit: On second thought, the highlights on the head are probably unnecessary. Thanks for the help. I hadn't even noticed he/she/it had arms until you mentioned it.

Just not happy with them. Top is an AR and bottom is a Gatling Gun Maybe the for grip on the AR looks goofy to me. Not sure. And the Mini Gun just looks so bland. Having a case of Spriter's Block.

Re: Sprite Help Thread
I tried to make a rusted weapon. A sort of "found in a flooded basement" type of gun. Did I do well? Does it need more rust, or less? Edit: Its a brass-ish color. I didnt make it grey or black.

Re: Sprite Help Thread
I feel like the outline is a tad too dark. Maybe use some more reads and browns. Or make the outline contrast less. A dark outline works well with your other, darker, stuff but here i feel it sticks out too much and takes away from the sprite as a whole. Just my thoughts

Just my thoughts Thanks, I'll keep working on it. ^^ As for yours, I made an edit. I might post a block of text explaining the process of how I make my sprites, but its almost 4AM. What I did here was just experimentation. The assault rifle seemed like a shotgun and the minigun seemed very thick, so I gave them the tune ups they needed.

So... I can't get past this error, no matter what I try to do to fix it.

Re: Sprite Help Thread
This thread is generally more for the actual artistic side of sprite help.
Your error is more generic. Feel free to make a thread and post the contents of the .ini that's crashing in it. (The error message you shared isn't helpful by itself)

Re: Sprite Help Thread
Heli door. Is it O.K? Edited version, and full Heli. And I also found there's no way to open DropShip door horizontally with my knowledge. Sad. Happy new year.

Re: Sprite Help Thread
Looks good to me!
By the way, I'm working on some Russian and East Bloc weapons, I'll give the sprites as soon as I come up with something I'm satisfied with. Right now, I'm doing an AS Val suppressed rifle, a RPO-A thermobaric launcher (think: ridiculously powerful single shot RPG) and a Chinese 20mm light grenade launcher.
