Re: How data realms will rule a country
==Overwiev== The Community of Data realms is a tiny, genial nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, cynical population of 7 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."
The enormous government is mainly concerned with Education, although Social Welfare and Healthcare are secondary priorities. The average income tax rate is 31%, but much higher for the wealthy. A substantial private sector is led by the Book Publishing industry, followed by Basket Weaving and Arms Manufacturing.
Citizens are barcoded to keep track of their movements, voting is compulsory, and the latest Harry Potter book is a bestseller. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown. Data realms's national animal is the Cat, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Data.
=Issues= Animal Liberation Front Strikes Again(issue 6) The increasingly militant Animal Liberation Front struck again last night, freeing dozens of chickens bound for delicious snack packs.
1 "These nuts have got to be stopped," demands concerned consumer Steffan Mistletoe. "They need to face the fact people want snack packs, no matter how many innocent chickens must be sacrificed. Besides, chickens would do the same to us if they had the chance."
2 "These Liberationists are highlighting an important issue," pleads Fanny Bush. "Too often, animals are put through needless cruelty, just to make their flesh taste a little more deliciously succulent. I'm sure we could ban the more horrific abuses without putting too much of a dent in our national obesity figures. Couldn't we?"
3 "Animals have feelings too!" yelled protestor Stan Sato, before being set upon by hungry passers-by. "Free the animals! Ban meat-eating!"
4 Economist Max Taffs has an alternative. "You don't need to take away the people's right to choose. You just need to build the costs of animal suffering into the price. A tax on meat-eating, in proportion to the amount of cruelty involved, would do the trick. Plus think of the benefit for the national coffers! Of course, poor people wouldn't be able to afford meat, but that's just more incentive for them to get jobs."
Cats On The Dinner Table?(issue 7) In a bid to provide a new revenue stream for Data realms's Beef-Based Agriculture industry, it has been suggested that cats could be added to the menu.
1 "The fact is, the cat population is out of control," says Beef-Based Agriculture spokesperson Peggy Eliot. "We have to do something about them anyway, so why not market them as tasty snacks? We could have cat kebabs, cat pies, cat-on-a-sticks--the possibilities are endless! Let's not pass up this golden opportunity to provide a feast, if you will, for our economy."
2 "I agree that something needs to be done about cat over-population," says random passer-by Buy Dimitrov, "but eating them? That's kind of gross. Let's just shoot the ones we have to and shovel their bodies into ditches like normal."
3 "I am shocked and appalled!" declared SPCA President Sophie White. "If anyone needs to be culled, it's us humans. The cats were here first, remember? We need to take this as a sign to get our industry--agriculture in particular--to back off. The cat is part of what makes Data realms a great nation!"
