Star Drive.
I've played SOTS 2. It was a while ago though. I remember the ships being cool.

Ah, Star Drive. I stopped playing it since there was so little progress being made on the game by the developer, and the fact that he never added multiplayer after he promised it.

I don't plan on getting the sequel, either. The game shouldn't be getting a sequel when it isn't even bloody finished.

Yeah, I noticed there are things missing that shouldn't really be missing.
Still, so far it's fun enough. I guess if the sequel improves what there is now I might get it on a sale.

Also, if you know of any other 4X games that are simple, I'd love to hear it. 4X games are great but I suck at them

Sequel is gonna be turn based with real time battles I think. Feels like a step backwards.

Simple isn't something that pops up often for the 4x genre, but Galactic Civilizations 2 is quite simple and easy to play. GalCiv3 is in development and I am so hyped for that game. It has multiplayer!

Balancing, community management, player satisfaction, subtle visual effects to drive the player, stuff like that. Even if the game structure is simple, the underlying design choices and optimizations are a lot deeper than you'd think at a glance

Neat.
I'm no good at designing the ships though.

gameplay can only go so far if you barely touch gameplay at all.

yeah the book has a pretty font, cool colors, but only 5 pages.
do you see what im getting at

Yes, behind design, there is psychology, so this means the book is a carefully crafted Psych textbook pretending to be about game design.
As someone interested in psychology, you have to recognize this as a fallacy.

It's on fundamentals of game design, not literally the mental process of why gamers go back. I was saying that in a broad sense.
So far, the only psychological parts are in semiotics, and that's barely psychological.

I don't mean to demean either the study of psychology nor game design, but in my experience much of what is written on game design is a weak application of basic psychological concepts that doesn't do justice to either discipline. I'd be happy for my guess to be wrong though.

I'd say it's more like using entry level psychology to introduce the designer into the minds of the gamers to better understand it, and once that hump is overcome, they could move onto other things such as creating meaningful play, immersion, architecture, etc.

Honestly 4X games are intimidating to me. I'm only really good at TBS games, and could barely hold over a RTS match.

It's more like spaceship LEGO than a ship designer. Still, people can make some awesome stuff with it.

I only really play strategy games. Civilization 4 at Emperor/Immortal, Dragon Commander on hard and so on.

I just love challenges in games. Currently working on saving the Byzantine Empire in EU4. Going very well.

I'm not very good at traditional RTS games, but I've always loved Relic's Dawn of War series and Company of Heroes series.
Nowadays I've gotten more into Paradox Development Studio's grand strategies, Crusader Kings 2, Europa Universalis IV and Victoria 2.
Victoria 2 was damn intimidating at first with its complex economy management and whatnot but holy ♥♥♥♥ do I love it when you get your economy running like a well-oiled machine.

Now you see what I see in the game. It's insane. You feel like you've played only a few hours and then, whoops you've done an all nighter.

I love Vicky 2, one of my favourite games ever.

Speaking of which, it's 2AM and apparently I played about 7 hours straight of Stardrive.
Then it got a fatal error because it can't handle the endgame for ♥♥♥♥.
On the bright side, I'm going to win if I play for another few hours since I'm building the Ascension building.

Alright you gentlemen I'm giving away some Steam keys from a Paradox Interactive bundle. There's Europa Universalis III Complete, Magicka and Hearts of Iron III. Gimme a shout if you want one of them.
