Re: The Lounge
After a week of searching, I finally pirated a textbook I needed for school, and it was hard as ♥♥♥♥ to find. It's not even available on #bookz, and I found it digging through old DDL services. God I am going to mirror this so nobody else has to suffer the dread I had suffered. I literally did not have the money or time to order a $40 book with no purchasable digital copy. If anyone is interested, it's a dense book on fundamentals of gameplay rules and design in general. All about what keeps the players playing more or less. Jargon heavy.

I remember when I found a mirror service that more or less had something to do with Wikipedia and Google. It had a bunch of PDF files for things like food, books, parks, national landmarks, and even some answers for a couple of tests on my current courses. It went down last year though and still have no knowledge of how I came across it in the first place. I would also like to skim through this book to see what keeps me playing.

Re: The Lounge
That book probably doesn't apply to some of the games I play. My game tastes are on the fringes for the most part. Grand Strategy and 4x, but I also have scatterings of games I enjoy in other genres.

Re: The Lounge
You'd be surprised at how often the same concepts are used in widely different gaming genres. Everything from casual timewasters to the complex intricacies of MMORPGs and grand strategy contain many elements that can be analyzed with the same tools to optimize gameplay enjoyment as well as getting people to play more.
Edit: Also things like game progression and learning the player how to play through gameplay.

Edit: Also things like game progression and learning the player how to play through gameplay. Hmmm. Valid point. I suppose the concepts are the same just implemented in different ways. Still, few games implement them in the same way. I've spent so many hours on that screen.

Re: The Lounge
I'm guessing this book is mainly a lot of Psych 101 smoke and mirrors. Skinner boxes and sunk cost fallacy and ♥♥♥♥ like that.

Re: The Lounge
Psychology smoke and mirrors. Yes, behind design, there is psychology, so this means the book is a carefully crafted Psych textbook pretending to be about game design. As someone interested in psychology, you have to recognize this as a fallacy.
It's on fundamentals of game design, not literally the mental process of why gamers go back. I was saying that in a broad sense. So far, the only psychological parts are in semiotics, and that's barely psychological.

I think I finally found a 4X game that isn't too complicated/difficult for me to handle.
