 :U

it's also completely and utterly unnecessary to spend the absurd quantities of currency required to upgrade to DDR4 when it comes out because 4GB of DDR2 can run modern games at very high settings no sweat

i am also not OCD about having the latest and greatest

   |   Re: MERRY CHRISTMASFair enough, presents are presents. But I meant more for future-proofing. If you ever want to upgrade beyond 4GB in a few years, you'll probably have to pay out the ass for older ram.

   |   Re: MERRY CHRISTMASI don't imagine the price on DDR3 is going up anytime soon. DDR4 is going to be expensive for a while after it comes out anyway.

   |   Re: MERRY CHRISTMASIt's quite lovely. ;o (because windows score sure means a lot w0w also it's a ridonkulous scale from 1.0 to 7.9 so there) TorrentHKU wrote: But I meant more for future-proofing. If you ever want to upgrade beyond 4GB in a few years, you'll probably have to pay out the ass for older ram. That's why i upgraded to DDR3, since DDR2 is actually more expensive right now what with its discontinued production, however my old mobo did not support DDR3. Also, it's 8GB i have now, so i don't think i'll be having RAM issues for the next coming years. :U (i mean, PS4 and XBone both have 8 gigs of DDR3-deriatives, and it's probably not smart to make games that take more than the consoles can deliver) Funkily enough, i think the next bottleneck for me is hard disk transfer rate, since i save all my games and stuff on good ol' HDD's. Windows is on the sole SSD in my rig, however, so it starts up super fast. c:

You'll only get about 5 years if you're lucky before your current stuff is considered obsolete. Except maybe for the 1-2tb hard disks, since 1tb still is quite a lot. Granted modern games are pushing on with 40gb installs, but even then you'd need about 25 of those to fill it up.

   |   Re: MERRY CHRISTMASNot... really?I mean yes the tech industry moves fast but in this case I'm talking about buying into a formfactor that is known to be on its way out, and the literally twice as good successor could be out within 3 months. The new stuff would be totally incompatible with the old, and you'd have to pay more for obsolete tech, rather than having what will likely be the standard for the next 5 or so years.
And I dunno about you but I don't have the money to drop on a brand new computer every year, I would just want to upgrade it incrementally as each part became the weakest link in the system (not enough ram, not enough HDD, weak videocard).

   |   Re: MERRY CHRISTMASI do not have enough superfluous income to be able to scrape together enough to buy a computer that is beefy enough to be considered adequate for more than 3 years, which is why I stick to buying the most cost-effective mid tier parts. Sure some forethought have to be applied when choosing a MOBO, but that's about it. The MOBO is the only part where being a scrooge is detrimental to being on par with the current generation. Granted, I didn't put a lot of thought into my computer when I built it with regards to newer technology, but that's mostly because I am not going to be able to upgrade it for the next 3-4 years of of life due to my financial situation, so I just picked the best components I could get for my cash.

   |   Re: MERRY CHRISTMASCPUs are not likely to become suddenly better in the next few years anyhow, we've pretty much hit the power wall for silicon. The biggest improvements in performance will come from software utilizing threads more efficiently and distributing computational task load.
