I really like rally cars from the 80's. The from uncompromising box flares to the stupid engine power and ridiculously wonderful engine noise.

since that image seems to be monochrome, it's probably a simply changing all the "color" pixels outside of a "non-color" profile, and converts it into a 0 alpha color.
[this is not even talking about color tolerance]

in the edge cases of fuzzy/blurred edges, convert the "color"-"non-color" gradient to a "0 alpha"-"non-color" gradient.
[again, there are many more ways you can go about this... it probably fits within the domain of line smoothing]

that being said, it's simple ♥♥♥♥ thing to do in photoshop, last I recall.
and it is something that is done with glows in cortex command.
