Eh. Bioshock had pretty meh gunplay, I'll give you that, and at times it felt like an almost generic corridor shooter- the boss fights felt especially out of place (final boss fight nevar forget)

With that said the atmosphere was top notch and it looked very pretty at its release, the concept was fairly original, and it was generally well-polished. Also, Andrew Ryan is a bamf of an antagonist.

I'd be enjoying Metro 2033 a lot more at the moment if it wasn't being a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ about not wanting to run in a resolution that is not either 1080p or some horrible low-res stretched bull♥♥♥♥

I spoiled half the plot twists in the game way before ever playing it, and they STILL totally surprised me.

I didn't really get the hype behind Bioshock, but it was ok. I cared enough to play it through, which is more than I can say for a lot of games.
Same with Mass Effect, it was interesting enough but I wouldn't buy a shirt for it. That is, by the way, my measure of a good game/series. If I would buy a shirt for it, it was a good series.
Or miniatures, in the case of Planetary Annihilation.

Metro 2033 was definitely a top 5 game
But I wanted to say that 2 of my other favourite FPS games are the Halo series and Battlefield Bad Company
For the story at least

I wanted to like Metro, and it was awesome except when you were fighting humans. I got to that level with what I think were nazis? After you go under that railway cart and can get the stealth or combat suits.

Why not awesome when fighting humans? I think the stealth sections were some of the most engaging parts. I was very compelled to use my throwing knives, keep out of the light and stay to the shadows, it was great
Fighting with the Nazis was also quite difficult, mainly when they gang up on you, but it was fun to watch them scurry around like rats and then drop them
Can never be too careful outside though, having to watch your gas mask and manage the Nazis and the mutants

I'm terrible at stealth, and it was really clunky stealth at that. But I have to say, any time you went to the surface was outstanding, and the bastard gun felt so good to use.

Post Re: The Lounge
Put about three hours into Metro. It's pretty solid, but I'm not finding it to be as gripping or engaging as I thought it might be. Maybe that'll come later. It's just like... oh, you're this Ruskie and you keep having flashbacks/visions and blah blah hallucinations something something chosen-one. It's... what's the word I'm looking for. Predictable, I guess?

The atmosphere's decent, though it is pretty much subterranean ♥♥♥♥ + poor light sources. Seeing people in the different areas underground: I feel like a better job could've been done in making them seem more realistic. Most of them don't even have some kind of silly one-line greeting to spout out like a TES char, they just stand there and stare blankly into space. It doesn't help suspension of disbelief in the slightest.

Combat's fun in that guns are thumpy and melee combat is pretty carnal, but it is not as challenging as I'd imagined it'd be. Hell, the first stealth area in the tunnels, I took out one guy with a throwing knife and then accidentally triggered one of those can-on-string-shaker things. At first I was going for cover-shooting from a distance, but the accuracy on the starting revolver isn't stellar so pretty soon I was left with a Bastard and a combat knife.

I then proceeded to kill four bandits using nothing but sprint and a knife, in the span of about 15 seconds

the ♥♥♥♥?

Now that I have the Volt Driver combat's kind of comical. It's pretty much just Taser the living ♥♥♥♥ out of anything that moves. In the rare event of a swarm, the Volt'll one-shot pretty much anything when charged up, and I still have my trusty dusty Bastard for close range spraying. Got a revolver with stock and optics for pseudosniping. There seem to be grenades and medkits and gasmask filters all over the place. And ammo. I don't get why I'd heard ammo's so scarce in this game, if you don't spray you'll have tons from what I can see.

tl;dr > Plot is rather hamhanded (pretty sure I can see where it's going), gunplay is really fun but unbalanced, enemy AI + Volt Driver is stupidly exploitable, atmosphere/mood is fairly well-done but not so immersive that I ever feel like I'm in the world of Metro. I am interested enough to keep playing, somehow doubt it'll be able to turn around to the point where I can consider it on Bioshock's level- the latter managed to suck me in for about six hours of play on my first sitting and had me going through a second playthrough in no time after the first.

I love the bastard gun so much. Watching the magazine empty is therapeutic.
