Well, I am DRL's resident controller expert/connoisseur/bullshitter. And this controller is gorgeous.

The overall shape/grip of the controller didn't change much, that's true, but there are some changes that might be for the better. Shoulder buttons are raised a little more and rear shoulder buttons are more like triggers. D-Pad has some extra raising on it, too, not that it really needed work. I guess I'll have to try the thumbsticks for myself but they look pretty nice- I like that they mix current gen stick styles by having a raised edge, like the 360 concave sticks, while still retaining a bump, like the PS3 convex sticks. I'm not totally sure how it'll play out- could end up being sticky, could end up allowing for more precision and stuff, so that'll be neat.

As a general note on the touchpad, I'm actually all for using "modern" methods of input (ie motion controls, touch-sensitivity) in small doses; I've seen this demonstrated before in certain games where I thought it was a really nice touch. For instance, in Killzone 2, when you'd use a sniper rifle, instead of having a button to steady your aim, the steadiness of your scope was determined by how you were holding the controller- if your hands were shaking, the scope would shake too. If games integrate the touchpad like that, I'll be pretty happy with it.

Speaking of Killzone, Killzone: Shadow Fall was announced at that conference. It looked ♥♥♥♥ gorgeous. Also, inFamous: Second Son. Same goes for it.

PS4 hardware specs seem decent enough, given the $429 / $529 initial price tag. 8GB of RAM and an x86 processor (So much for Cell, eh? Not surprised, devs pretty much universally complained it was a bit of a ♥♥♥♥♥ to work with and not worth the added power it gave way back in 2006) might allow for things like actual AA and whatnot, which I'm sure graphicphiles will love.

Oh, and before "but 8 gigs isn't that much I mean most mid-end PCs have 8 gigs of RAM"- yeah, and current gen consoles have a whopping 512mb. I think getting sixteen times the memory to work with will slightly help with running nicer-looking games.

It doesn't honestly matter, only DVI will be a fair bit cheaper.

DVI = Fantastic HD display quality
HDMI = DVI + audio

That's about the only difference. HDMI cables are pretty cheap though.

I think Sony basically perfected the game controller when they put analog sticks on the PS1 pad. This new stuff doesn't like terrible but is completely unnecessary IMO.

Except for the retard-ass analogue sticks on the PS3 controller. I hate the convex shape, it makes my hands slip around when I try to do complex inputs. The XBox 360 controller is my favorite.

360's concave sticks feel sticky for me. PS3 sticks' material is a lot more grippy and lets you quickly move without much force while also preventing accidental slipping. Maybe if you're using it for the first time or something, I can see it being a little slippy I guess, but after a few days' experience it should be fine. PS4 controller's sticks could have potential.

Calling it right now.
When Microsoft has their press conference, they're just gonna be like "Uh, yeah, we're just gonna... have a normal console. Like before."
And I will applaud them.

Please lets not get into controller wars again
Satirical or not

Though perhaps previous encounters have taught us

I'd love for you to put money on that bet because no, they won't. There is not the slightest chance in hell that they'll do that. They're going to push Kinect like crazy, tout how you can look at your gamerscore using a Windows Phone while you play XBLA minigames on it, reveal a brilliant DRM measure requiring a constant internet connection to play any game, show their new achievements icons, and reemphasize that on Xbox you get Call of Duty map packs earlier than other platforms.

Post Re: The Lounge
So a basic summary of PS4 conference:
  • Specs basically equivalent to a mid-end PC, but of course, console games are hella optimized, so should have some nice eyecandy
  • SHARING AND CLOUDS AND STUFF, not majorly excited about it but I guess it could appeal to other people
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall: Return of the Hitlerites. No, seriously, looks pretty solid
  • Watch_Dogs: Orgasmic. Not an exclusive but man did it look pretty.
  • Deep Down kind of looks like a Souls game, might be interesting
  • Drive Club looked nice but as a redditor put it, "No one gives a ♥♥♥♥ about accurately modeled fibers in the seats of their Lamborghini. Or if the diffraction pattern of the head lights are correct. They care about realistic driving physics and quality gameplay." Will have to see more before judging
  • Destiny looked interesting, wonder how Bungie will do with it
  • inFamous: Second Son: Perhaps I'm prejudiced as a fan of the first two games but I am really looking forward to this, Sucker Punch have got the superhero genre down pat and I can't wait for more from them
  • Knack: Has a sorta cartoony style, almost reminded me of Ratchet & Clank, but a big part of it seemed to be "Check out all these physics, ♥♥♥♥, we've got some hardcore calculations and ♥♥♥♥ going down here-" which is lovely, of course
  • Diablo 3: I don't even, why? Whatever
  • Kinda surprised Valve didn't make a show after last year's E3 when they were like "CHECK OUT PORTAL 2 COOP AND CLOUD GAMING YAAAY"

After their abysmal 2006 PS3 launch conference, Sony did a lot better with this.

Personally I just think whoever designed them had 3 arms and nobody was brave enough to be mean to him about it, crush his hopeful dreams of finally having a console he could use to his fullest potential.

On another note, as a PC gamer reading all the disappointing news about new consoles, I wish computer parts were cheaper so that consoles would finally wind up where they belong in the modern day where they're basically gimped computers, dead and gone.
I do believe price and ease-of-setup are the main reasons consoles hang around.
