You may not have gun crime in your country, but very likely you do not have a large amount of guns already out there.
In the US, we have a lot of guns out there. Attempting to remove them would lead to a bunch of hidden guns, a good portion of them in the hands of people who use them for nefarious purposes.

This. I'm not going to really get involved in this argument, but the people who commit violent crimes (for the most part) don't do it with a gun they obtained legally.

A mosin nagant and the 7.62x54r round it's chambered for are very adequate for hunting anything wild in north america within 100 meters. Each round costs around twenty cents, and the rifle costs about 150 dollars.
I'm not sure what the market value is of the meat of a large elk. Your guess is as good as mine. Let's lowball insanely, and say twenty dollars. After eight elk, you've saved money, gotten some exercise in the outdoors, and maybe bonded with a family member. My real guess would be that a large elk's meat may be worth about 160 dollars.
And the longer you use it, the less significant the rifle's cost is. If you're getting more meat per shot on average than what might be in, say, a chicken nugget, you'll eventually be saving money.
Hunting is extremely low on my list of reasons why I support armed citizenry, I barely care about it, but I just wanted to clarify that you're absolutely wrong if you're implying that it can't be fiscally beneficial when feeding your family.

I was coming home just a while ago from getting my driver's license renewed, library, shopping, etc, and I noticed the dirty truck in front of me was a police truck. It was kinda hard to tell, at first. I wonder if they have rules that they have to keep their vehicles clean enough to be easily distinguishable? They should. Anyways, I kept my distance, no need to risk annoying them, and kept going. I was almost home, and thought that was that. And then I saw that he was pulling into my driveway. Considering that my car is totally caked in cat paw prints, although that doesn't hide pertinent information from other drivers, it would be a little hypocritical.

You know what's funny though, there is no middle-of-the-road approach in US politics. There are people who are saying we should ban all guns immediately. On the other side are people who are saying we should have armed guards at every school in the US.
It's hard being reasonable nowadays.

If you ban all guns, then there will be a slight reduction on crimes. It's actually quite reasonable. So if you ban all guns, we won't need guards.

I think people just jump to guns as the problem simply because it's easier than the much more complicated issues of society and mental health, if media stopped plastering the killers name and face all over the place then people wouldn't seek shooting as a way to go out with a bang.
If people could cheaply access proper mental health care than they may never even develop motivation to go out and shoot people.
