Know what I'm proud of? We didn't have a single more-than-passing reference to Hitler in this discussion.
Well done kids, we had a decent argument!

My father does go hunting every fall, which is also the reason we have a jämthund.

Post Re: The Lounge
I'm morally opposed to recreational hunting but I guess I can except that because if you feel like killing wild animals for absolutely no reason is fun there's not much I can do about it.
I've seen people provide evidence that removing guns doesn't reduce violent crime, what with the availability of other weapons (though I've seen as much evidence also saying the opposite, I'm merely saying there's no easy conclusion there) but I don't think I've ever seen anyone provide evidence for me that suggested that the presence of household guns is a deterrent to any other form of crime

As far as I can tell looking at statistics, robberies and home invasions are just as common in the US as they are anywhere else, so the "home defence" angle of gun ownership just doesn't really add up to me
I also don't think that violent protest or revolt is a sensible or effective way of deposing your government (especially in highly civilised areas like America) and so can't support that angle either

Unless you are literally hunting for food (in which case how are you paying for bullets?) there really is literally no reason I can think of that your average civilian would need a firearm, and even then if you are hunting you can do that with a handgun and if you want to go after game from much further away then you could just have legally chartered hunting stations rather than having to keep your own.
I have never ever seen any convincing case that anybody would need shotguns, assault rifles or in fact any kind of rifle at all around their home, and if they're not necessary and you aren't a collector then why keep dangerous implements that have no purpose other than death around in the first place? That's just adding completely unecessary risks and safety concerns that would be no worry at all with a sensible blanket ban on tools that are pointless if you're not trying to kill something.

iirc there's population control reasons behind moose hunting in Finland too, but don't quote me on that
and I'm not sure about this neither, but I don't think a handgun would be very good at moose hunting

also, all the guns in our house, which is a grand total of... 3, i think, are kept in a locked metal safe specifically made for keeping guns safe

Population control makes sense but... honestly sounds more like a government job rather than something where you'd just shout "hey everyone grab a gun!" and send them out to kill animals larger than a man with no regulation

Maybe this just seems obvious to me because I live in those weird countries where nobody is allowed to keep guns in their houses but somehow, magically, we haven't all been overrun by criminals (I understand it is much harder to uproot an existing gun culture than to remove one that didn't already exist)

My country has one of the lowest levels of gun homicides in the world, I have never needed or even considered needing a gun in my entire life, nobody I know has ever needed or considered needing a gun in my life and the only time any of their grandparents needed guns were when they were shipped off to fight Germans
Not even our police carry guns
Obviously guns can't be removed over night but it seriously confuses me how other civilsed countries don't look at that and think "oh"

You don't need guns, why keep them around at all?

the moose hunting licenses and stuff is actually far more complicated than random people going into the woods with guns in their hands
iirc the government does some fancy statistics calculaziones every year and decides how many moose shall be shot and then hands out kill licenses to registered hunting groups
or something like that
again, i'm not very knowledgeable about this whole thing, but that's the impression i've got from my father

Oh no I'm sure it is a more organised process than I was describing it as, definitely!
I'm still confused as to why killing a couple of moose every three years is good justification for allowing every citizen of a country to keep some guns around the house though, when you could just deputize that to government agents of some description. Or lend the guns through your moose control agency.

I guess you're right there. Seems to me like gun laws are pretty tightly chained to the culture of their nation.

Fun times are had by all when a foreigner thinks they understand your country and know how to fix it.

Just to clarify, I may be defending gun owners and such, but I'm on Metal Chao's side here for the most part. I mean I think if someone wants to buy, like, a pistol or hunting rifle then ok sure. Beyond that, nope.

You mean we're not having fun yet? ♥♥♥♥...
I'm merely expressing my complete bafflement that this issue comes up over and over again and yet always even the most anti-gun sides seem to be arguing "hey we should have slightly fewer guns" rather than "Hey hang on, why do we have all these weapons there's no reason to use in our houses?"
And nothing in this topic has explained it to me

"It's cultural" doesn't really add up to enough of an explanation either, tradition's usually a very poor excuse for continuing bad practises

That's why you do it gradually over a period of years, and try and make sure your kids aren't attached to antiquated laws that have no real application to modern life!
NOW we're having fun!
