And there's the problem with the US and why people want guns.

@Duh's statistics:
Mostly because those are the easiest to get.
I mean you can do a lot less damage with a handgun than an assault rifle, so you need to jump through fewer hoops.
I know it wouldn't do much to ban assault weapons, but it's more the principle of it. Why the ♥♥♥♥ do you need a gun designed explicitly for killing people, rather than one that is actually practical for other uses?

GOD DAMMIT YOU NINJAS

To put you on equal footing with the military and police of course.
EDIT: That is the entire point of the "Right to bear arms" amendment, making sure the people have the ability to keep the government in check.

I live in NZ, where the only guns availible are hunting rifles and pistols, I feel safer than in SA, where I could have gotten my hands on a Kalashnikov.
I ask again, what makes the US special?

Post Re: The Lounge
So ehm... Gun control, huh? I'm kinda in between right now. I realize that there are a lot of people who enjoy guns as a hobby and a lot of responsible gun owners like my dad who keeps all his guns locked up in a safe and uses it only for having fun shooting cans and whatnot and hunting with his kids. If there's any gun to blame it's handguns, because of their easily concealed nature. Even then you have to realize that cops, SWAT, TSA and flight marshals, not to mention our entire military (which is pretty ludicrously funded if you haven't noticed) all use firearms and hand guns. I do believe that the more accessibly a gun is, the higher crime rates are. Now there's two ways you can take that, we can either scrap all the guns we can and reduce the number of firearms drastically and removing crime from all but the radical criminals, or you can actually listen to most of these people (the none crazy ones at least) and respond to these anomalies like school shooting which is basically societies fault. You still have to take into account that the common people with weapons have revolutionized the colonies and saved us from invasion during WWII... But whateves I'm 15 and none of this matters to me YET!

Yeah, how bout them crime rates.
Sadly this one doesn't compare it to the US but I think it's rather telling. Just because there's no guns, doesn't mean you're any safer.

3. Bolt. Action. Rifle. You carry around a bolt action rifle for a day.
4. The worlds military mabe?
5. The military is quite obviously an exception. One should trust ones government.
6. Err, besides insulated body armour, no.
7. More than one cop.
8. They look like guns, and hurt like hell.
9. The rest of the normal first world can deal with it, what makes the US special?

1. The rest of the countries aren't the USA. This is going to sound conceited, but the US is a different country than most. You have a lot more freedoms, and in general can do whatever the hell you want with your life as long as you aren't harming people. Guns are one of those rights. All them other countries never really had the sort of freedom the US does. By freedom, I mean "you are free to do what you want, when you want, how you want", not "BACK TO WORK, FARMER SCUM. MEET YOUR QUOTA."
2. See above.
3. That's still a gun. Just carry it around for the one day you want to go murder some people.
4. They can and do make their own guns. Cutting out the entirety of the civilian market in the world's biggest civilian gun market would STILL cause a big impact.
5. What makes them so infalliable?
6. Ok let's make protective garments illegal too, just so we can be sure that our not-guns work properly.
7. Not always.
8. But not kill. Nobody's going to be afraid of what looks like a gun if they KNOW all it can do is make you fall down and twitch, especially when your buddy(s) can then just run up to the guy and slash him with a knife.
9. See 1.

Guns are a problem, they are for killing and NOTHING else, a normal person shouldn't be killing people.
Hunting, target practice, self defence, mental deterrent, hell just for shooting at targets for fun. Once again, only as dangerous as you make them.

You're saying people care more about their right to own a gun than the lives of their children?

Quite frankly, a lot of people do, since 999999/1000000 they don't KNOW the children.

If a gun is hidden under a mattress it isn't killing someone.
Doesn't take much to pull it out.

Automatic handguns should also be banned. There is no reason a normal person should have a weapon capable of killing twelve people before reloading.
Any non automatic gun can do that with a magazine that holds twelve bullets, but yes, automatic guns in general.

Re: Tasers: I don't think putting acknowledged torture devices out into the field is any great alternative.
Not only that but deaths due to the device are climbing with increased usage.

And that about says it all. Well done America.

The only thing that saved America from invasion during WORLD war two, was the WORLD'S armies. The US population would have been slaughtered by the Japanese soldies, guns or no.
If you want to shoot cans, use an air rifle or BB gun.

1. Yeah... That's concieted allright.
3. After the first shot you'd be decked.
4. Militaries don't make their own guns. They hire corporations to design and make their guns.
5. If you don't trust your own army, then there are problems.
6. That's not what I'm saying. Anyway, body armour is hard enough to come by.
7. Semi automatic tasers. Also, why are there a mob of knife wielding phschos attacking a cop?
8. "make you fall down and twitch". You don't know much about tasers.

That is so sad I can't even respond.

The only gun a civilian should be able to own AT ALL is a bolt action rifle. And only for hunting.

You... You are trying to be funny right? You'd rather get shot than electrocuted? Guns are faaaaaar more lethal than tasers.
This logic is so flawed I can't even put it into words.

You'd rather your police armed with torture devices than actual weapons, and the civilian populace unarmed?
Police brutality is a real problem, you should not turn a blind eye to it.

I'd like to point out this quote.
Quote:
For instance, an April, 2007 study of the Chicago Police Department found that out of more than 10,000 police abuse complaints filed between 2002 and 2003, only 19 resulted in meaningful disciplinary action.

The pain of getting shot is worse and lasts for a longer period of time. Gunshots cause major injuries.
Tasers are only lethal if the person who was tased has a heart condition.
