Who cares if it looks stupid? They're ♥♥♥♥ astronauts. They're supposed to stay alive in space and do ♥♥♥♥, not look pimp.
Besides the only real thing that looks unappealing about the suit is the metal thingy on the back, which I'm going to assume is required for life support and utility reasons.

actually it's intended so that an astronaut can literally just attach the back of their suit to a hatch on a rover, and then get out through that built-in airlock
