Today I found that if you've got a stomach full of just water, vomiting hard enough to blast it through your nose REALLY clears out your sinuses.

AVG is the only properly free one I know of with repute.

Yeah, AVG's adequate as hell.
"Wasted" wasn't the plan, but I like to try things at least a little bit when I hear they're stupid, to personally confirm. Jump off a small cliff, get run over by just a special education bus, you know, everything's fine in moderation.

There's like two or three tiers of AV that will work.
AVG, Avast!, MSE, Avira, they'll all do the trick. Paying for any of them is silly though.

MWB isn't an antivirus, it's a malware tool. I used to recommend Spybot: S&D, but I believe I've heard they're slipping a bit in terms of coverage.
