Hey, anyone ever watched that movie Donnie Darko? I watched it and it was awesome, but I didn't understand, then I searched for it and now I understand. I really recommend that movie, really awesome.

The government should develop a penalty worse than the death penalty. Something that just destroys anything that's left of the mind, slowly.

If I remember my religious education (Don't worry, I didn't go to a catholic school or some crap like that), hell is only for those people who can be redeemed.
There is the lake of oblivion, if I remember correctly. That's for people who well and truly cannot be redeemed. Where as hell eventually redeems you, the lake of oblivion is well and truly, the end of the line. You go in, your cease to be. No soul, or anything.

Not sure where exactly to post this (and has nothing to do with the current conversation) so... Just wanna say that apparently CC doesn't like 5 10 zero division bombs going off at once. Haha.

 Re: The Lounge
Depends on what brand of Christianity you go with but from a Catholic standpoint (took several theo/philosophy classes in Uni), Hell is not really a place that God puts you, it's the place you put yourself if, after you die, you decide you don't want to be with God. Kinda like, there's a big atomic wasteland covering the earth, and there's a city that's clean and functioning well, but you have to acknowledge that the city is the only good place left on the earth to get in. If you decide you want to keep looking elsewhere for habitable places, you stay in the wasteland until you finally decide you can't do anything else. You can also just choose to keep wandering the wasteland forever, if that's what you decide to do. I'm no Catholic so I can't say whether I agree that it's true or not, but it fits in a lot better with the New Testament God than the whole fire and brimstone deal that 19th century preachers were so fond of. New Testament God doesn't work that way.
Also, re: punishing murderers: Punishing a murder does nothing to bring back the murdered. Punishment's only viable goal is to deter the murderer and others in similar situations from performing the act again (And punishment has been shown to be an unreliable source of behavior modification (punishment must be applied immediately, consistently, and commensurately in order to be effective, all three of which are unable to be rigorously enforced in the justice system)). The death penalty, on the other hand, isn't a punishment. It removes the human from the population so that they are no longer able to perform any action because we believe that their very presence on the earth is a greater danger to society than the human is intrinsically worth. It is pretty much the last resort for repeat, infeasible to treat, convicts. Making up a punishment that is "worse than death" is torture, and torture doesn't reliably deter any possible repeat actions by others.
