I bought this during the sale and didn't play it until yesterday and ohgod it's the best space combat game ever Look, I made a few ships.
They're all "fast-in, fast-out" strike fighters with respectable firepower.

I've been messing around with the stuff I have, and I think my preferred playstyle is "Make it look sort of cool and hope I can kill stuff with it" At least, that's how it's been so far.

Gentlemen,
Meet the M2 Shotgun, aka The Boomstick. It darts fast before opening up with a battery of flak cannons. It can one hit most craft.
Alright how the heck do I get rotational thrusters to work? I can make my ship move forward, but not side to side.

Did you turn the thrusters sideways?
EDIT: Why is there no option to disable the HUD? This game needs it.

I had some awesome fights last night on Skiv's server. One guy invented the perfect counter to my fast missileboat strike fighter: lots of light lasers w/ a salvo module. Not a single missile ever touched him. Until he ran out of lasers.

You could try Borg Cube style. It's very...odd, to get used to but it works rather well. Very stable, no drift at all.
I put two turrets on there. It's like a god damn defense platform, but you can perform maneouvers other players can't. Like a L turn with no curve, which lets you keep the fire on the enemy for the whole time. Slap rail guns on it and your golden.
