Epicepicepic. :)

Only thing I can say is maybe add some light in the front since the foreground is rather dark overall. Since the figure is your selling point you want it to really pop. Really nicely done though!

hey I got a question for you guys, While I'm not really the "bookish" type when it comes to art, some things are really impossible to self teach, I was curious if any of you knew of a good resource for some of the more technical parts of art. Namely anatomy and color theory. The first because there absolutely isn't an easy way to self-teach that, the second because I like to know the basis behind "why" something looks good, not just knowing how to make it so.

In semi-on topic news, I found out my local college offers course scholarships in art classes for any hopeful artists who also qualify for an academic scholarship in a core class. Depending on how I do on my PSAT test next week I may be looking at 2-3 different scholarships and having to pay very, very little for college. (Not even planning to go to school for art in particular, it would literally just be a 'free' degree in art.)

And then there is this little thumbnail-esque scribble I did for somebody on the Starbound forums.

Good looking canine there. About your question on books: I can't name anything specific (cause I haven't read any :P ) but I would still recommend anything by Andrew Loomis, from what I've read and seen. I've been meaning to get some of his books myself.

Apart from that, You can do some photostudies as well if you're trying to learn how to draw specific things right. Just grab a picture from somewhere with a pose/bodypart/any other subject you want to study and try and recreate it.

Thanks and thanks, hadn't thought of basically doing reference drawing for that purpose in particular...

On the topic of Andrew Loomis books, my friend passed me this link just a minute ago.

Well, there's no easy way to truly learn anything about art, is there? But anyways, other than Andrew Loomis there, i don't really know any specific good resources. Look around, i guess? There's a wealth of things to be found on the intertoobs. I mean, just searching "anatomy" on deviantART alone yields 450k results, and likewise does "color theory" yield 17k results. The first dozen or so results are actually really good.

Aight, I'll consider that.

At any rate I practiced some head sketches following one of Loomis' books.

Well...
It ain't pretty.

I believe you'll find a fair bit of useful information in this link: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread ... 8-links%29

As for anatomy, Loomis is #1 but I would also suggest books my George Bridgman, Bridgman's technique on constructing the human figure was more clear to me than Loomis. Burne Hogarth's anatomy books are great as well.

And this tutorial has some nice little tidbits on color and lighting.

Couldn't think of anything to draw, felt like drawing.
Sat down with my art program open.
Sat for several more minutes trying to think of something to draw.
Just started painting a medieval knight with a simple flat brush, took me like 5 minutes to produce this.

It's not great (more like terrible), but I still feel proud of it for some reason.

EDIT: another drawing in the quick-shitty-speedpaint style.

It's kinda amusing to just start drawing an idea with a single brush at a single size and seeing what you can manage.

Double EDIT: I don't know why but sometimes I just make some huge leap in my understanding of something.
Like now, I just figured out shading a bit better I think.

Triple EDIT: Made a little sketchish painting to mess around with brush settings more.

I have no idea why, but the hands and arms look completely wrong, yet when I pay closer attention they're actually correct. Probably just the coat throwing it off a bit.

At any rate, I like the small bit of terrain you drew around his feet, and the color scheme is pretty nice.

Oh, and looks vaguely like Abe Lincoln, just saying.

Yeah, the one visible hand I pretty much messed up, couldn't figure it out at the end and wanted to move on... :P
Think the left arm might be too short.

I think it's really a combination of two issues.
1. High pockets: those pockets on the jacket are rather high, and probably not "made for resting your hands in in real life" so to speak. You could do it, but you would look weird.
I think this is why the right arm looks 'off', consider having a character simply hanging a thumb or a few fingers in a pocket that high up, more like what you would expect a normal person to do.
2. Awkward pose: While I still think it might just be 'correct' anatomically, the pose itself is a bit awkward and not what a normal human would 'rest' in.
Most people hold a gun without downward grips 'casually' so that their first knuckles are pointing straight down. He almost appears to be curling his hand up-and-in, which is pretty uncomfortable in real life as well, even with a break-action gun. Basically, rotate the hand back the other way a bit.

The legs and torso are pretty solid though.

EDIT: Did some scribblings with general construction.

I'm starting to get the hang of using cubes in construction.
