Ok, so following the advice I got a while back I decided to do 5-tone(including base color) cel shading on the sandworm just to practice.

Here is what I got so far(only the head as of now)

If you'll forgive my stupidity from earlier, I would like to say that looks really nice! Much better than before.
I'd recommend some realigning on the tail though, it still looks a tad crooked.
Ok, so here's a kicker. If you were to do something SIMILAR but not nearly as bad as gradients; smoothing out the various shades so the lighting is more subtle it would actually probably look really good!

Why thank you! Her name is Eve and she's the first cat I've had in about 3 years.

Thanks for the advice, I was honestly considering smoothing out the shades a bit myself.

on the note of the tail: I have a bit of a problem there, I use "linework layers" in SAI which is like kiddie level vector art for laying out your linework easily. (think "pen tool" from Photoshop)
the only problem with this is moving it, as it's a bunch of stored vector points that dislike listening to the selection tools... and are also not tied to the colors in the layer below it.
(I tend to have a good 5-50 layers open at a time depending on how complex the piece is)

however after I finish the shading I might just try merging it with the standard layer(destroying the vector data),moving it, then manually cleaning it up.

Gonna be making a game (serious project, if I don't complete it to at least a basic level then I'll probably fail). It will be using a 2d engine but I'm going to use pre-rendered 3d because it's isometric (well top-down, 8 directional movement, the diagonals are pretty much iso) and it's basically about dinosaurs (which are hard enough to draw in iso perspective, let alone with [8*number of frames*number of animations] sprites needed).

Pre-rendered 3D is definitely a cool way to go for that, may want to worry bout deadlines of course since that method can take a while too. (though arguably less time then actually creating the 8 directional sprites per item)

I thought I'd share this week's art endeavors with you fellas.
This scene is based on the English Civil War, no specific battle.

And a character study

Ah, thanks for that, Torrent. And thanks Bombzero, detail in simple gesture is something I work for so I'm glad to hear that.
