What about naming units?
Was this ever suggested? I would like it to give each unit a name.. it gives them some personality, so you have a reason why you should be careful with this unit The search function didn't helped me.

I don't believe there's ever been plans to implement something like this. Probably because the whole system of switching between units is lore'd as a brain unit switching between controlling mindless meat puppets. Naming them wouldn't make sense.
You might be able to mod it in, but I don't know if your units would last long enough for it to be worth the time to name them.

Why do you need an ingame naming system? Just do it like this: Ok I name that browncoat heavy Nick, That Dummy stick legs, And my favorite crab in the whole world Bob, Wait what is that? is that an enemy dummy next to bob? Wait NO dont shoot him! NO BOB! Please dont kill him! BOB NOOOOOOOO!!!!! OH MY GOD BOB GUTS ALL OVER ME THE BLOOD! THE BOB GUTS ARE EVERYWHERE OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY- *brain explodes*

this isn't a bad idea. in fact you could have an RPG-like system where you have named heros who gain experience for each kill or battle won or whatever.
they're clones but you can only call them in once a battle.
leveling them up would add armor, better thrusters, effects like regeneration and limb restoration and such...
hero units in the metagame wouldn't be a bad idea. you could possibly even station hero units at bases to gain a higher probability of fending off an attack or an attack even occurring (a "scary presence" effect or something like that?)

Only thing hero units would have better than others would be affection from you. Why kit out an old clone when you can just buy a new one?

It's already been modded in, not going to become part of the game however.
Too much against the idea of disposable bodies.

Yes, brainbots would be the only thing I can imagine having this feature, although it's very feature creepy and we've already got tons of other features we need to polish first.
