Only if they're terrible. First things first, equip the Machina*. Your top priorities should be maxing out charge rate and explosive headshots. And, as always, shoot the medic bots first. A sniper won't make or break a round unless they're truly incompetent at it and much better at another class, but a good one can make things much more favourable for you.
*The Heatmaker is also nice due to its Focus mode, but the Machina's bonuses are better-suited for MvM in my experience.
The thing about Explosive Headshots is that any time you score a headshot (which should be fairly often, the bots are bad at dodging) zappy stuff will arc to the heads of any nearby bots and make them suffer a short bleed effect that takes a pretty sizeable chunk out of their health, softening them up for your teammates. Upgrading Explosive Headshots increases the range, damage, and duration of the zappy bleed effect. Throw in the fact the Machina can score multiple headshots (and bodyshots) when fully-charged even without the damage upgrades, and you can cripple and rip up mobs of enemies -- especially with a couple of teammates around to clean up afterwards. The Machina's ability to penetrate and kill when fully charged is invaluable because those medics will use their healtargets as bullet sponges. All other sniper rifles have to pay a not insignificant amount of money for the priviledge of penetrating shots - though the Machina can benefit from it as well if you frequently fire without charging to 100% each time.
Start throwing in the damage upgrades and you can do upwards of 700, maybe more than 1000 damage, when headshotting superbots. Any waves with lots of large, slow-moving enemies (minigun heavybots!) will fall before you in no time. Snipers are also handy for picking off sniperbots, since they broadcast their location with the blue beam and don't usually have the sniping speed/pop-out-shoot-duck-in behaviour of normal players.
That said, Sniper is definitely an optional class, as a competent scout or pyro should be ambushing the medicbots to kill them. About the only thing they aren't really effective against, I would say... is the Tank.
Every class has their role, same as in the normal game.

Re: The Lounge
I'm buying new speakers. All the Paradox grand strategy games have epic soundtracks.
Here, an example.
Europa Universalis 3.
Hearts of Iron 3. I always placed as Germany to see how well I could do the war. Best run was conquering the entirety of Europe, Asia and northern Africa by 1943 and starting the landings across the east coast of North America. Difficult, but fun.
