Re: Image Dump (Caution Lots of Images)
I think that picture is highly biased.
Games like Deus Ex and MGS4 (If you want to count those as FPS) gave you several ways to go in the story line.
Hell even the MW3 campaign levels had some neat stealth pathways you could take.

I don't think it's supposed to be very serious.

Re: Image Dump (Caution Lots of Images)
I like how people hate on modern FPSes so much just to appear trendy. In a lot of gameplay commentary I've seen a lot of commentators say stuff like "this is good... UNLIKE COD" just randomly out of nowhere. It's a lot like those guys who go on every music video and make comments like "BETTER THAN JUSTIN BIEBER" without any provocation.

Also, there seems to be a sentiment that 'linear' is a bad thing. There can be good linear shooters - Crysis was linear, and I thought it was fun as ♥♥♥♥. Uncharted 2, while not in first-person, was a very enjoyable linear shooter. Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were both linear, and very critically acclaimed.

Re: Image Dump (Caution Lots of Images)
I think the issue more arrises when the base game isnt that great in the first place, then people pick out reasons that they wouldn't have noticed if they didn't already think that, then that idea spreads and people start saying the same to 'fit in', thus getting what we have today.
the concept of 'linearity is bad' has been spiked by an increase in linearity in supposedly open-world games leading to increased opposition against linearity in general... if any of that makes any ♥♥♥♥ sense what so ever outside of my head.

Re: Image Dump (Caution Lots of Images)
Yeah, I understand if you complain about a ♥♥♥♥ like Final Fantasy XIII- here comes a game in a long running series of non-linear installments with a budget bigger than some Hollywood movies, and what does it give the player? 80 hours of walking down what may as well be a single hallway, fights that can be completely automated, and enough cinematics to make Metal Gear seem like it's rushing its plot. Now, that- by all means, complain about it being linear. But linearity is not a bad thing. Invisible walls and narrow corridors and quest arrows have their purpose, namely that they keep gameplay streamlined and fluid. Sure, it's no fun if you have no freedom at all, but I have yet to see a game that never gives you freedom of choice. Even if it's something as small as picking left or right at a fork in the road, that's a choice.
I think too many people are expecting games to have huge open worlds and fifty unique endings. Obviously a bit of exaggeration, yet it's true to an extent.
