Alien Assault
WELCOME, BATTLE BROTH-I mean, welcome, Orbital Marines! Anyway, Alien Assault is a free turn-based top-down strategy game based off of the original Space Hulk board game made by Games Workshop, where you carry out objectives in Space Hulks abandoned space ships. Mainly, it'll be killing genestealers aliens. You have a squad of 5 soldiers to fiddle around with, and each turn gets you 4 action points per soldier so he can do things. You also get a random number of command points that are shared among the soldiers, and you can choose to burn them all on one guy or divide them among a few. Images spoiler'd for relative hugeness. Soldiers can rank up and get cosmetic changes, as well as improvements to attack rolls if you enable that in the options menu. The game ships with a map editor, and it is rather easy to create your own new squads to play around with. If you're interested, you can download it here: http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/alienassault/full-game/34785.html

Re: Alien Assault
Game seems dead, latest version was released more than 2 years ago. Anyway, I love dead games, but those green capsules on the ground doesn't seem to be soldiers in green suits.

Re: Alien Assault
It's fun, actually.
It should have an online version.

Re: Alien Assault
From what I gather on their forums the devs are working on an updated sequel, so that explains the dead state.

Re: Alien Assault
Updated sequel!
Sounds interesting. I played a bit more, but I don't like the fact that at times you can simply have three quarters of your marines in overwatch and kill stuff like nothing in maps that aren't excesively mazy.
(I have the odd feeling that those two words are written bad or don't exist)

Re: Alien Assault
I haven't gotten a marine to survive more than a mission so far. Overwatch is really handy, though.
I'm still on tutorial missions. :<

Re: Alien Assault
I used to get stuck a lot on the tutorial mission in which you got two marines for the first time. I finally let the marines where they begin, facing the vertical entrances to the room on overwatch, and if hostiles tried to get through the horizontal entrance I killed it normally and later returned to overwatch.

Re: Alien Assault
Really? I seem to have pretty good luck with not jamming. The only problem is that my marines took Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy classes.

Re: Alien Assault
It seems like a nice game with lots of cool stuff but the luck factor is just absurd and utterly ruins the game for me.

Re: Alien Assault
I got stuck in a mission in which you are basically forced to go melee. The problem is that this Marines suck badly at melee fighting. Also, my guns began jamming much more often now.
So yeah, luck factor needs to get redesigned.

The damn vulcan blowing up the first time I fired after a reload, slaughtering my highly experienced captain in the process... And the melee... sheesh. Why are these guys wearing armour anyway? It seems to do jack shite for them. They could just as well wear loincloths. It'd be a lot more fun if they would gain a hitpoint for every experience level, so that you won't easily lose your most experienced soldiers by melee'ing some stupid low level bug. And have that vulcan just remove 1 or 2 hitpoints when it blows up.

Re: Alien Assault
I've lost all my experienced marines a long, long time ago to bugs. There was, however, one level where my regular marines held out using melee for 3 turns. Then once my sergeant was attacked and killed everyone else died too.

Re: Alien Assault
Suddenly, all my guns began jamming on overwatch after a single failed shot.

Re: Alien Assault
They are making a second one it seems. Hopefully that one will be much better. This one's one to look out for as well: http://www.xenonauts.com/
