Re: The Lounge
So today I figured out how to make crossed-out text. I'm stupid for not noticing it earlier.

Re: The Lounge
Oh my god this is ♥♥♥♥ retarded so funny! in other news, windows 8 looks like a bigger dozy than vista so far, I'm content to sit here in my windows 7 safety bunker until the storm clears and windows 9 shines on.

Re: The Lounge
I honestly hope it crashes and burns worse than Vista (and ♥♥♥♥ the Vista haters I used it for years and it was fine). Windows 8 looks awful to me. I'll take the new task manager though, but as like a service pack for 7 or something.

I looked it up, yeah Windows 8 is gonna be garbage. That looks like it'd be more appropriate for a smartphone, keep that sissy ♥♥♥♥ away from my desktop.

Re: The Lounge
MS design committee guy# 1: "Hey our user base really loves the current interface, let's make a shitty UI, market it as windows 8 and then go back to the old UI for windows 9." guy #2: "That's brilliant we'll make millions, maybe we should market it as user friendly too." guy #3: "Yeah, the instant you call something user friendly the neckbeards retreat in disgust!" ALL: MUAH HA HA HA It's a stage play I'm working on.

Re: The Lounge
Windows 8, as Duh pointed out, is pretty clearly intended mostly to run on a tablet and to put Microsoft in more control of the environment. It's not some stupid move (well, we can't really guarantee that yet, but still) by a bunch of confused corporate suits, it's a calculated move following an existing trend toward demodularization. I talked about it a bit in another thread, so I'll just quote the relevant bit. Quote: The current trend in popular technology seems to be toward integration instead of modularization. In other words, people want one device that does everything (e.g. tablets, smart phones). PCs don't mesh too well with this, as, although they can do far more tasks, they are innately modular. Anybody who's done PC gaming for more than a year or two knows that constantly upgrading individual pieces of the computer is just part of the process. Even from the standpoint of a PC when you first get it, it's going to come with peripherals to deal with -- mice, keyboards, speakers and monitors -- which is more than many people can handle, or at least more than they care to deal with. Laptops and tablet PCs are an obvious exception to this rule... Basically, Microsoft feels like traditional PCs are becoming less relevant, and is hoping that they can outdo the iPad while there's still room to do so. I can't say it'll work, but from a business point of view, it makes a certain amount of sense.

Re: The Lounge
This thing is like that skanky-ass Xbox interface where you have to go through a ton of adds just to look up a demo. Now I'm nostalgic for the days when I could just pop a disc into my console and not go through a ton of BS, the loss of that draw is why I'm moving to PC; might as well have the extras I choose, not what gets spammed at me. Also, doing things that apple has already dominated hasn't worked so far for MS, why do they think trying to do tablets will work for them?

Re: The Lounge
Not always. The first version of Windows was made as a response to the popularity of graphic interfaces, which had -- surprise -- been popularized by the Mac OS. Microsoft clearly feels like tablets are where the market is headed, and that desktop PCs are becoming irrelevant, so just as they moved away from command-line to Windows, they're now moving from desktop to tablet.
What they're offering also has some actual advantages over the iPad. For one, it comes with a built-in keyboard and stand, which makes it way easier to use for word processing and other home office uses. This comes back to both the concept of integration and the idea of making tablets the standard for computing. Apple has done a great job at marketing the iPad as an entertainment device, but it's clearly shown its flaws as far as productivity goes: trying to write something on a flat surface just doesn't work as well.
The other thing it offers, and which Apple has consistently fallen flat on, is compatibility. If you get an iPad, you can only run apps designed specifically for an iDevice. Microsoft's tablet just runs Windows. In theory, you could do anything with it that you can do with a normal PC, only it's more portable and easier to work with. Again, that means it can replace the desktop PC entirely for a lot of people.
So, for those of us who prefer a beefy desktop, this probably isn't great news, and Windows 8 likely won't be a great choice as far as operating systems go. For most of the market, though (and that's who Microsoft cares about), it might actually be a reasonable alternative to both the iPad and the traditional PC. If they can market it well, it might just work.

Hey, I'm on the internet and therefore an expert, don't correct me./sarcasm mode In any case, just keep your fingers crossed, I'm riding on the hope that even the average person has gotten used to the usual desktop setup and therefore will be confused and frustrated by the new style. fingers crossed
