Re: [SoRtD] Adventures of the Ulysses, Pt. 1
Time for TOTAL COPOUT OPTION: TIMESKIP!
Saber Squad, Site Gamma
The hunt for the reason this planet is so damn interesting has, after several gruelling hours of combat through the undercity, lead you to Site Gamma. Slap bang under the middle of the city. It took ten minutes for the lift to reach the top of the drilling rig, and another ten to get down, even with CD-V5 trying to rig the system to go faster. No sign of the supposed enemy commando group.
Work was definitely continued off the record, judging by the signs of activity down here.
As the lift approaches the bottom of the drilling rig, the rock wall on one side of the cylindrical shaft gives way to... a vast chasm, perhaps two or three kilometers in diameter. The miners - nowhere to be seen, of course - appear to have stopped the rig dead in its tracks along one edge of the void, carving out a small ledge which is covered in surveying gear. Floodlights project harsh white beams into the darkness, gently illuminating the far side of the cavern. Laser rangefinders are still set up, measuring the sheer size of the space.
At first, the space seems empty, but as you explore and rummage through the surveying kit and whatever else was left, you start to see it. Lurking at the corners of your sight, at first; gone the moment you snap to face it. Then it slowly becomes more and more visible, flickering and shimmering in the scattered light of the floodlights, half-registering on the rangefinders. Some kind of structure or ship, a huge... thing, squat and round, black as night, perhaps half the size of the Ulysses, and intricately... carved? Curves and coils wander across the structure, making it look distinctly organic.

Re: [SoRtD] Adventures of the Ulysses, Pt. 1
Nice timing. I had a draft I was going to finish up and post in a few hours. Might as well do it now.
There's a chunk of exposition half way through I've spoilered out because it's longwinded and not immediately relevant, but I hope it sheds a little more light on how the Alliance operates for those of you curious about that, as well as other events in Alliance history.
The structure is quite a distance away, as is the floor of the cavern. It doesn't look like there's any way to get across to it, much less find an entrance.
By some miracle, you're able to get through to Command.
Mason » "Command, do you copy?"
Command » "The line is a little off, but we read you. Sitrep?"
Mason » "We've located a probable artifact at Site Gamma. All the other sites were clear."
Command » "...Gamma? Copy that."
Intel » "The video feeds from your helmetcams are coming up with static, Saber. What are we looking at here?"
Mason » "Well it's uhh... big and black, all organic 'n' shiny, kinda like a bigass beetle the size of a building. But not beetle-shaped."
Intel » "Hang five... crossreferencing... can you see anything that looks like a propulsion system?"
Mason » "No. It's hard to make out any detail, the whole thing looks kinda fuzzy and grainy, like... static. We couldn't see it when we first came down, but it sorta... started showing itself to us? We started seeing it on the site equipment at first. All the rangefinders were acting weird when we got down here."
Intel » "Hmmm. Judging by your reports and what we were able to extract from the Port Tower, the overall appearance sounds similar to the FTL originator artifact from Titan, but there's nothing in the original Titan reports about a... hang on. Let me check one of the other Sol Artifact reports... right, here we are. A related artifact-structure from Callisto -- the same Callisto Installation that lead to the deployment of the Gate System that we use for interplanetary/intrasystem FTL to avoid fitting full drives on every civilian ship from here to the Core -- had what the techs called a 'Visual Interference Field'. The VIF rendered the--"
Command » "This is all very fascinating but can we cut to the chase, Intel? What are we dealing with here?"
Intel » "Okay, let me put this in dummy terms. It hacks your brain. It even works on the cyberbrains used by military androids and cyborg troopers. Basically, it edits itself out of your field of view. In realtime. It can even make you see things that aren't actually there, too. Prolonged exposure to the effect builds up an immunity, which can be accelerated if something already hints at the presence of the device, such as the anomalies you were seeing on the site equipment. This clued you in to the fact it was there, and you subconciously developed countermeasures much faster... although judging from Saber's statement the field is still partially effective, so it may be working with another kind of stealth system. The system on Callisto was badly damaged, but it sounds like this one might be intact. Are you sure you're dealing with a structure?"
Mason » "If we ain't it's one funky-ass ship, sir."
Command » "We can't rule out an unconventional propulsion system since what we presume were the main engines of the Titan wreckage were inoperable. Whatever it is, we need that thing secure. If it's as big as you say, we won't be able to move it without tearing down half the city and calling in a Planetary Excavation Vessel, so we need to move fast if we want to secure it. Comms, fire up the satellite and wire it to the teleconference room, we need to put out a call for additional reinforcements. I want a line to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the top five members of the Alliance Senate. Mason, you and your squad sit tight. We'll have new orders for you shortly."
Commence the intolerability of waiting. Fortunately, someone appears to have left a pack of cards at the site, so you can at least entertain yourself. ____________________________________________________________________________________
FTL Comm Session, Ulysses Teleconference Room
The Captain of the Ulysses sits at the head of the table in full deck uniform. Several seats are filled by the highest-ranking members of the Ulysses' crew, and the holographic heads of the three Joint Chiefs of Staff and five key members of the Alliance Senate hover above other chairs. It's a slightly disconcerting effect, but works fairly well in practice.
The room itself is perhaps thrice as long as it is wide, the central feature being the table itself - a long and spartan metal affair, surrounded by several seats - one at each end, and a number of others spaced along the sides.
Dramatis Personae, speaking roles only;
Marine Commandant - Chief of Staff of the Alliance Marines, veteran of several campaigns. Has not had his war wounds 'corrected' as a point of pride.
Ulysses Captain - Better known to you as Command. Experienced beyond his years thanks to extensive combat action prior to the signing of the Accords.
Eldest Senator - Elected representative of the Aramis Belt, veteran governor and politician. Ex-Alliance Intelligence Officer with his own set of agents.
Naval Commander - Chief of Staff of the Alliance Navy, only assumed command very recently. Not used to flexing his power to get access to information.
General of the Army - Chief of Staff of the Alliance Army, stern and uncompromising, and stubborn to the bitter end. A strong ally, and stronger enemy.
Young Senator - Only very recently ascended to his position by right of inheritance, replacing his father. Powerful, but naïve and inexperienced.
Elder Senator - A man of few words but decisive action. Believed to be due to retire in several months.
Middle-Aged Senator - Easily bewildered by political meetings, is convinced his election as Senator was a cruel joke.
Marine Commandant » "Captain, I hope you have a good reason for calling a meeting like this, especially if you're going to use an authorization code and encryption method that haven't been in use since the Accords were signed. I haven't seen a telecon table this busy in two decades, and we had to break the decryptor out of cold storage! What the hell are you playing at?"
Ulysses Captain » "In a moment, Commandant. As you're already aware, we arrived to find the planet infested with hostile xenobioforms and the main starport subverted by xenorobotic forces, and the Ulysses was forced to make a crash landing. Ten minutes ago, we were contacted by one of our ground teams carrying out a search of the undercity-- shortly prior to that call we seized control of the local starport and downloaded the records from the Administrator's secure terminal. Despite the Administrator's attempts to erase all evidence of his conduct, we have confirmation that he was carrying out extended excavation off the record after discovering the presence of an artifact that matches descriptions of both the Titan wreckage and Callisto installation. Until that ground team contact ten minutes ago, we had no in-field confirmation."
Eldest Senator » "You're sure?"
Ulysses Captain » "There is a slim possibility it belongs to another entity, but the artifact was confirmed to possess a Visual Interference Field Generator, and once able to visually identify the artifact, our ground team confirmed its appearance. Those of you who have studied the Callisto installation report will understand what I'm referring to in regards to the Generator."
Naval Commander » "That was the device that can 'edit' the presence of somebody's perception in real time, even electronic security systems, correct?"
General of the Army » "Correct. The applications of such a device could have a massive influence on the outcome of an engagement. Any engagement. The optical camouflage project has been promising, but it's not standing up too well in field trials, and it's too expensive for front-line employment since you need to deploy it on a per-item basis. The area-effect displayed by an Interference Generator could be much more useful, and applicable to space combat as well."
Young Senator » "What I don't get is why they build the city right on top of the thing. Do you think the Bureau knew all along?"
Ulysses Captain » "I wouldn't be too certain. According to the Bureau of Expansion and Colonization reports, the plan was always to run the colony on geothermals, and they're highly concentrated under the city site... though that could be a convenient 'coincidence', or perhaps some result of the artifact itself. I'm aware it's entirely possible the Bureau falsified the reports. Regardless, the VIF is reported to be operating in better condition than that of the Callisto installation, and the installation itself will likely contain other devices relevant to the interests of the Alliance and every Outsider* this side of the Galactic Core."
*An 'inoffensive' term used to refer to all alien races and entities that are regarded to be a power comparable or superior to the Terran Alliance.
Elder Senator » "Then we should mobilize all the assets we can to secure the location at once."
Marine Commandant » "I wanna know why everyone else is all over that thing and how they found out about it. You think the Administrator was planning on selling it to an outsider?"
Ulysses Captain » "That seems a highly probable outcome. It is likely that he was not careful enough, and whilst he avoided our attention, he drew that of every outsider with assets in the vicinity."
Eldest Senator » "I'll have my people carry out a full investigation on the Bureau at once. This could run deeper than just that Administrator, and if it does, then there could be even greater concerns for the Alliance than a border dispute over an insignificant ball of water and the ancient relics it holds."
Ulysses Captain » "Thank you, Senator Aramaki."
Naval Commander » "I can't mobilize the entire fleet without the Senate's full authority, and getting that is going to be like drawing blood from a stone... no offense, gentlemen. The reinforcement fleet ships are jumping to FTL the moment they hit the meetup now, so as to avoid drawing too much attention from outsider merchants by loitering. Scout Cruisers Ajax and Hector will be the first out, followed by the Command Cruiser Samsara and her attendant ships. After that I can't say what will be coming, just any free ships we can throw over with as few questions asked as possible."
General of the Army » "Along with all attendant Army and Marine assets, of course."
Young Senator » "So what do we do from here?"
Marine Commandant » "Well, the Captain here is the officer that's been there on the ground longest. I believe that gives him command seniority in this theatre. All in favour?"
Naval Commander » "Agreed."
General of the Army » "Agreed."
Marine Commandant » "You heard 'em, Captain. Big man's chair is all yours for this one. Get the civvies out, kick those bastards off our planet, and secure the installation for a Planetary Excavator."
Middle-Aged Senator » "An Excavator? Are you insane? That'll render the planet unusable for decades!"
Eldest Senator » "The planet is far too remote for us to protect effectively whilst investigating it. If we want sole control of the installation, we need to move it somewhere safer. We'll still own it on paper and nobody else will be able to use it either; with a network of satellites in orbit we can be sure nobody will try to sneak robominers down, whilst at the same time searching for any other possible artifact sites should they exist. Besides, if we have the technology to pull entire chunks of the crust out, we have the technology to fix the damage we've done, and the damage that the rest of the conflict will no doubt cause. Captain, proceed as you see fit."
Ulysses Captain » "With pleasure. Commander, I'll need one of the Fast Marine Transports from the Samsara to evacuate the civilians. To our current knowledge we have approximately three hundred and fifty civilians in the Capital and need of immediate extraction, with attendant Militia forces. If it weren't for that Militia, we wouldn't have any civilians left to extract. I can't speak for the status of other settlements; though they were likely not targeted by the initial attacks, the xenobioforms have been detected on all of the major landmasses."
Navy Commander » "Excuse me for a moment, I'll make the necessary arrangements now. Once the Samsara is on site we can have one of the fast transports touch down empty on the starport, load up, and be out of the system within a matter of hours."
Marine Commandant » "Hey, I'll pin the medals to those Militia guys myself if I have to. If the reports you forwarded to us about those big metal bastards is right, those guys got some serious guts."
Ulysses Captain » "I believe several members of the Marine Special Operations Group retired there, Commandant. That may in fact be the real reason why those civilians are still alive to be extracted."
Young Senator » "SOG survivors...? I didn't think the SOG really existed!"
Marine Commandant » "Technically, it doesn't... at least not any more. The SOG was dissolved just over five years ago, on order of the Senate. Three years before you took over for your old man."
Ulysses Captain » "Yes. We have confirmation that Lieutenant Snipes is in command of the Militia. Regardless, we're getting off track."
Naval Commander » "I've notified the Captain of the Samsara, and he's got the first FMT earmarked for extracting the civilians once the Marines aboard have deployed. Fortunately we should have excess transport capacity so we won't have to leave anyone behind once the Excavator is done, even with the damage to the Ulysses' squadships."
Ulysses Captain » "If we're done, gentlemen, I have a war to prevent and an installation to extract."
General of the Army » "Use whatever force you deem necessary, Captain."
With that, the teleconference ends. The Captain slumps back into his chair with a sigh.
There's another call, midway through CD dealing another set of hands. Good thing there's nothing important to bet with down here with the way Niko is playing...
Command » "Saber, listen up. The Alliance Navy, Army, and Marines are mobilizing as many assets as they can without drawing attention from Outsiders or the Senate, and one of the top-ranking Senators has his people looking into the situation with the Bureau and the Administrator to see how far the news of this installation got. The Spartans and Deltas will be taking over the security detail, they should be there in about half an hour. Less if you send the lift up right now. Once they're there, I want you back to the starport on the double. I think it's about time someone tapped your potential, and I have a target in mind. I'll brief you in person. Command out."
You have a while to discuss the situation between yourselves before your replacements arrive. I'll update in the next few days, but until then you are free to interact with each other as you please, rather than making a single simple action post each. Just remember you weren't privy to the meeting itself; if it's not mentioned outside the spoiler, you're not aware of it in-character.

"Well this has been pretty painless so far, although my trigger fingers getting itchy... Someone send that lift up and keep you're wits about you, knowing my luck when it comes down it'll be crawling with those xeno creeps." Marvelous work so far, absolutely marvelous, I wish I had the time to put half as much time and thought to put into my RtDs, because this is turning out brilliant!
