Wait, what do you mean, "better than Data"? Did I say that?



All I meant was that the way I play is different from the way Data plays, because I use flak cannons and he uses regular guns.


I love the way Data plays, by the way. It seems very fun.

But you'd never see Data decide to kill the enemy brain by ramming his own brain-dropship into the enemy brain-dropship.


Similarly I don't let my soldiers die as easily as he does.

That's all.


So in the context of my question about the assault rifle, Data seems to use assault rifles all the time mostly because he never bothers to use the other weapons. So as a person who does use other weapons, what is the special value of the assault rifle?

You are right on that. Like, I just pick the M16 for some wierd reason. It's not a "specialized weapon", I mean, it doesn't have any remarkable pros and cons. Maybe I just pick it because of that, it's like a pistol but stronger, like a HMG but less expensive/heavy/slow reloading.

I know I'm pointing out the obvious, but sometimes it is so obvious that we forget it. The thing of assault rifles is that they are very simple and reliable, they are good for any situation, that's why they don't stand out when compared to other weapons.

Actually, from what I can tell, the M16 is a lot more effective than the Coalition assault rifle. First of all, the M16 bullets have no air resistance, and they seem to create exitwounds with ease on limbs. The Coalition assault rifle is significantly weaker, and I have a hard time killing anything with it unless I shoot point-blank.

Also, I don't know if it's just me, but do you people find the shotguns simply too weak? They only fire five projectiles per shot, and even at close range an smg or an assault rifle would fare better against the enemy.

Game shotguns walk a very fine line. :roll:

But yeah, there's a reason I made the 40K Recomp Shotgun as powerful as I did. On the other hand I suppose the AI being able to annihilate you in one or two blasts at longer ranges isn't very fun either.

Tricky to balance.

It is especially hard to balance shotguns in CC because in reality, shotguns deal a tremendous amount of tissue trauma at any range and are relatively easy to use. Transferring these weapons to 2D are a challenge unto themselves.

But in most video games players have an assumption about how certain guns work (For exampe, the Uzi is considered a very accurate submachine gun in the real world, but there is a consensus in the FPS community that it is a spray and pray weapon), so shotguns have a niche to fill as 'slighty better than melee weapons' range guns.

Just use the auto-shotgun for now, it gets the job done at short to mid range, and even long against most unarmoured foes.

Re: redundancies of most basic projectile weapons.

I think an unlock system would fix this for as long as there is stuff left to unlock / develop / research / steal / whatever. Or at least lessen the problem of "why use 'x' when 'y' is better in every way?"

What I like about this gun:Good high price

What I don't like about this gun and I think should be changed about it:Inaccurate, I will fire with it and most of the time it won't hit anything with the explosion just the shrapnel, heck most of the time it will just fly out into the middle of no where.

You do know that a real assault rifle (like this one I've used, pretty close to the Coal Assault rifle in looks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ak_5) fires 30 shots in about 2sec in full auto, would not fit in this game I think.

The Coalition Assault Rifle has an RPM of 800 in the stat files. The Compact variant ups that to 840.
