Post Any chance of a Steam release?
Hey guys! I picked up Cortex Command with the first humble bundle release and it's easily my favorite in the pack. Was super excited to hear that a new release came out recently, and that the next one should be 1.0 =D

Anyway, I was curious if there's any plans for releasing the game on steam as many other games from the humble bundle (and game in general) are. It would make patching and reinstalling and so on so much more convenient, and would probably increase your potential audience multi-fold. Apologies if this has been asked before.

Thank you for your time!

It used to say on the HiB page "Cortex Command will be added to your Steam code when it's released for Steam" But not anymore. My guess is that the devs said no?

Yeah, I agree. It would massively boost the game's popularity. Let's hope they do! :)

Now, Steam only puts games into a specific folder. This folder, funnily enough, is located in program files.

CC + program files = problems
Steam = program files

Thus, CC + Steam = problem

Nope!

You can install Steam wherever you like, and it'll put games under wherever you installed it. For instance, I have 4 partitions - C, D, E, and F. I put Steam on F, and that's where it puts all my Steam games.

That said, if you install Steam to your Program Files, then yes, it will probably be an issue.

What do you mean by "Program Files"? The default installation directory for CC is in Program Files (x86)\Data Realms\Cortex Command

Also, the game is DRM-free and pretty small, I don't see much reason for a Steam release other than, like you said, popularity maybe.

It's only as stupid as the user, really.

What you probably saw was someone adding CC as a non-Steam game to it, like a shortcut. This allows you to use the Steam Overlay & Screenshot functions and let your Friends know you're in non-Steam games. It's a convenience thing.

Any folders that are variants of "Program Files" or "Windows" on your Operating System are probably bad places to be installing things to under Windows Vista or Windows 7.

That said, if you set up a Program Files folder on another drive entirely (I have one on my E partition, which is where I -really- install most programs that'd like to be installed to Program Files) it should be fine.

Lol, what? That makes no sense.

Maybe for this game (though I haven't had any problems with installing it in the DEFAULT directory), but everything else I've ever installed works just fine.

What problems exactly come from installing the game in Program Files variants? If it caused a major problem you would think the default install directory would be changed.

False, Win7 is not some magic error magnet, its oftentimes more stable then Xp or Mac, (obviously better then vista, which itself wasnt that bad) and I have CC installed fine, error free, and functional underneath Program files in C:.

stop with the random hatred of windows 7 people.
(sorry just had to say this, Win7 has a strange negative perception of it on the internet)

I have nothing against Win7, it's a significant step up from Vista, which I spent far too much time using. This is not opinion, this is based on my observations of Cortex Command acting weirdly for some users when installed to Program Files. Other obscure independently-made titles can have similar problems.

I know it doesn't necessarily make sense, but it can be problematic for some users, and installing it elsewhere can fix the problem. That's all there is to it.

Actually, with regards to that post you quoted, I tried installing both versions as well and it didn't work right, but it didn't have anything to do with Program Files as far as I could tell. More like some sort of registry problem trying to install the same game twice. Not sure entirely.

I haven't heard of any other programs having problems with Program Files, ever. If CC has a problem, okay, but you made a blanket statement and so far I've seen no proof of that. No offense.

The problem is that Vista's (and occasionally Windows 7's) default security blocks certain operations within Program Files, and, unlike most games, Cortex Command saves and reads everything from its installation folder. There are ways to unblock the folder, but that's about all you can do. Personally, I have Vista's UAC turned off, because it causes plenty of other problems, too.

Ahh, okay, so it's a UAC issue. I was getting really confused about this "Program Files"-specific thing. Thanks for the clarification.

I (and most enthusiasts I know) tend to turn off UAC immediately so that's probably why I've never heard of it.

Also I never said CC didn't have a problem, just that I had never heard of it being an issue with other programs. I actually went out of my way to clarify that in the last sentence of my previous post.

UAC off + administrator is the only way to go.
Frankly, I don't understand people who leave UAC on.

Indeed, there are some systems which are simply borked.
Regardless, an issue like that is a BIG obstacle to CC getting on Steam. :(

Could it not simply be installed somewhere else by default?
