The rest of the trip is uneventful, and it’s not long before Grif starts picking up weak chatter from the other squad leaders on the general network. The forest eventually gives way to a large open area, with the main colony in the middle. The edges of Taris are unsettlingly quiet, all of the buildings silent and abandoned. Off in the distance, the faint but unmistakeable sound of gunfire - and the occasional outbreak of energy weapon fire - can be heard. As the APC moves through the city and towards the location indicated by Broadsword, the signals become clearer.

Sword Alpha « ”Fang-1, report? You have a better view of the street than we do.”

Fang-1 « “I think they stopped moving up for now, but at this rate we’re gonna run out of ammo before they run out of bodies. Any sign of those reinforcements?”

Sword Alpha « “Saber just popped up on local squadnet, no sign of the other squads yet. I’m sure as hell tired of getting shot at so they better get here soon. Hey, Saber Lead, you there?”

The sounds of gunfire pick up a little, and you can clearly hear the occasional loud *crack* of a Marine Sniper Rifle over everything else.

Sword Alpha « ”At first we thought we were up against the standard colony security 'bots, but we've started seeing a handful of unknown models amongst the attackers. Smarter, better armed, and tougher, too. Fang?”

Fang-1 « “Yeah, and Fang-3 thinks he saw a squad of infantry skulking around the subway entrance, they weren't ours, right?”

Fang-3 « “Uh huh. Pure black, couldn't make out any markings or IDs, no IFF, and the helmets looked like those high-FOV EVA helmets they issue to the engineerin-- hangon.”

Fang-3 pauses, and another rifle shot rings out moments later.

Fang-3 « “..got it. Yeah, engineering crew. Plus none of our active squads are using energy weapons.”

Sword Alpha « “Spooky. I don't think Central had any spec ops teams out this way. Maybe it's some colonists who got lucky? At least some of 'em tried to fight back, we know that much.”

Fang-1 « “You saw the bodies we found, the ones that weren't torn apart were shot up by their own 'bots. No way those were colos, assuming Fang-3 wasn't seeing ghosts.”

Sword Alpha « “Just sayin'. Look, Saber, get your asses over here, they're too damn quiet. I think they're bringin' up some heavy support or some bull♥♥♥♥, I hear something big coming this way and it ain't Jonesy's donut-hoggin' excuse for a mouth. Delta's got a missile launcher but I don't fancy our odds on getting a good shot on whatever it is. The hell did you boys run into anyway? We heard Broadsword's shelling from over here. What warranted that kind of firepower?”

"All right men, sounds like we're up against some security bots, both standard and some upgraded models. There have also been reports of some supposed 'well armed and organised civilians' in the area, but this whole thing reeks of some serious conspiracy ♥♥♥♥, so keep your wits about you."
