Set up a spiked wooden palisade around the village and dig a steep (leg-cracking height) trench.

Dot the plains with shallow mines. Dig out stone, flint, and any metal deposits.

Carve an obelisk out of solid rock in praise of Ikar.

Cover the nearby land with pastures for livestock and plant hardy root vegetables.

Begin equipping a special militia guard with spears and heavy shields.

After the lava flow dissipates, make an attempt to find the melted ashes of the miners. Anoint the obelisk with said ashes.

Along with digging the trench, reinforce the palisade with bands of spiked metal.

Train the militia in brutal conditions, to make them into the elite Iron Guard. Give them heavier armor.

Set up towers along the palisade. Arm some of the populace with crossbows, and station them in the towers.

Press on with mining operations.

Dig a large pit just outside town, cover walls in brick.

Send some workers to nearby volcano to set up lava channels to said pit.
