If I wanted to date someone I'd probably try doing it in real life, even if there are no sexy aliens around

Working on that principle metal you'd rather sign up for middle eastern conflict than play a generic FPS, yes?

No, because killing people in real life is in many ways divorced from dating people in real life

If you put milk on your cereal, does that mean you like to pour milk on all foods?
How about milk in your tea? Do you therefore also put milk in everything else that you drink?

I actually don't feel that dating and war are all that different, they both make me ♥♥♥♥ bricks anyway, I'd much rather play both virtually, pour milk in most of my drinks since milk is the best drink and eat all my cereal dry.

Just do drugs, then you can experience it. And yeah, I never got the point of dating sims either.

I'm not saying they're inherently terrible, strange though it may be it's fine for people to like things I have no interest in, it's just the same reason I don't bother dating virtual people in Mass Effect
It is unsatisfying as they are not a real person, unconvincing because I am not able to type my own lines but must rely on the one provided by the author and doesn't even work as pornography

Interesting.

I find that rather than than its gameplay or its graphics (I can't play any game for ♥♥♥♥ and I've never owned a console good enough for this generation's graphics anyway), I rate a game based on two things - the musical score and the storyline. In no game ever have typed commands been close enough for me to perceive them as personal, since they have to fulfil the parameters of the game since that is what a game is, intrinsically.

My introversy coupled with my overbearing prison-like lifestyle means I find most videogame characters, especially ones I particularly like or dislike, very much real. I grow attached to my character, frequent NPCs and other NPCs I think look or act good too.

Also, uh, if you ask the right people they'll tell you a little of my pornographic habits and I can assure you videogames work quite well enough for me. I think I really am an example of the target audience for the dating sim niche, yet I play them infrequently at best.

I'm going to say I have to agree with Roast, and while I wouldn't say I feel as though they are real, I can get emotional attached to characters in a well written game. Maybe we're just easily manipulated...
On the note of games and the like, anybody else played Front Mission Evolved?
Now that is a perfect example of a terrible story, not to mention bad game play and character with the only emotion I feel for them is rage.
