On IRC today someone convinced me that Jade's penfriend (who made the rabbit) probably is her Grandad and made me realise some stuff about The Scratch that I didn't before

Pre-Scratch the trolls were pretty civilised and then got absolutely destroyed by sburb because they were nowhere near ready, so they struck a deal and activated the scratch to create a new session which they could win
This swapped the players and their ancestors so the original players became the ancestors of the new players, so the trolls from Homestuck were the ancestors of the ancestors in the pre-scratch session.

So in Scratched Earth, the players will be Mom, Dad, Bro and Grandpa Harley (I am assuming that Grandpa would fill in for Bec in these circumstances because that would be weird)
So that makes it fairly easy for him to be the penfriend, and also might explain what he is doing in the medium when he was nowhere near any of the houses that entered (and was in fact dead at the time)

That actually sounds just plausible enough to work.

Going from this panel, my guess is that the new players will be Mom, Nanna, Bro and Grandpa Harley, since those are their biological ancestors instead of just being their guardians. If it were a switch with guardians, the trolls would have replaced their Lusus companions (or maybe that's actually how it worked? I guess we don't really know). Of course, this is all assuming that both scratches will work the same, which could just as easily not be the case.

Ah yes quite right, I always forget that Dad is not actually the ectoparent but the child of one
It also neatly removes Bec from the equation

Is being a host for Lord English an exclusive power of Scratch?
Scratch always said his death would summon Lord English and it did.

Scratch was made out of Cal and LE has Cal's head.
Jack was made out of Becquerel, with First Guardian powers.
Jack!English would have mastery over both time and space.

Ok, wait, what does it mean if there's an exclamation mark between the two parts of a character's name, and why is it so goddamn annoying?

It is generally used to alleviate confusion when there are multiple versions of the same character in one story
So Karkat and Future!Karkat and Dream!Karkat
