Best way to get rid of a lot of memory on my computer?
I wanna get rid of a lot of ♥♥♥♥ on my PC that is taking up space, but I don't know what good programs to use or which ones to trust. I only have 60~ GB left on my hard drive, and I want to install a 10 GB game, but I don't want to be left with only 50 GB storage. Also having this little amount of storage left is slowing me down a shitton, so there's that too. So what should I do, DRL?

Delete/uninstall a bunch of stuff you don't use.

Get rid of your porn?
But seriously. You should never trust a program to random, indiscriminately delete files on your computer. Do it yourself; it might take a little longer, but you're a hell of a lot better off. Make the decision that you really don't need to keep this program installed, or that program backed up sixteen times.
Also, look into Windows Restore; it's very possibly storing multiple extremely large backups, when one or two will probably suffice.

Nuke 'n' Pave I do that every six months or so. I back up everything I like, and then format and reinstall. Keep everything running nicely.

Re: Best way to get rid of a lot of memory on my computer?
Ok then.
The thing is that every month or so I bring up CCleaner as well as defrag my computer.
Also: Anyone her on Win 7 that knows if the temp folder in Appdata>Local>temp is anything important? From what I can tell it's just all of my old downloads, but who knows, maybe something is in there that I shouldn't delete.
EDIT: Ok, apparently it is OK to delete everything in your temp folder. Doing that now + defragmenting + other stuff.
EDITEDIT: HOLY ♥♥♥♥ I FREED UP 20 MORE GB OF MEMORY ALREADY Maybe by the time my defragger is finished I'll have even more space? :o

defragmenting just makes it so your computer can access files faster, doesn't really clear up any space.

Re: Best way to get rid of a lot of memory on my computer?
defragmenting a hard disk drive works by organizing information on the physical storage medium to be closer to the center of the spinning disc
meaning that the access head has to move less to get to your data
do not ever do it to a solid state drive, unless you're a complete idiot.

Re: Best way to get rid of a lot of memory on my computer?
It also puts all your fragmented files back together, which is the main purpose. Fragmentation affect some file systems, like FAT or NTFS more than others because they're what's termed 'dense'. like, ignoring all the filesystem crap, you write a file with AAAAAAAAAAAAAA and your HDD looks like this and then a different one with BBBBBBBBBBBBB and it's all like Code: AAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBBBB and then add some more AAAAAs to the first one Code: AAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBBBBAAAAAAAAAA and oh-ho you've got this file split into parts. Defragging will put those AAAAs next to each other so when you read off the disk it doesn't have to skip over some BBBBBs wasting time and slowing you down. The great thing about these sort of filesystems is that you can easily partition them because there's not data everywhere like when you're using ext3. The bonus of using something like ext3 however is you don't have to defrag often or at all. oh god just read this for an explanation http://geekblog.oneandoneis2.org/index. ... ragmentingbut yeah manually uninstall whatever you don't want. Delete all your old folders full of images videos whatever other crap you have lying around.

Here, take this.I used it last night. It displays what is taking up the most memory, handily placed into boxes according to folder and size. I managed to clean 150GB of files using that. It doesn't delete it, but it does make it easier to see what is using up all your memory.

That thing is terribly difficult to read for me. JDiskReport does the same, but in a pie chart.

Mmmmm.... Pie chart....
Anyway, I found out the one of the biggest thing using up space in my hard drive were images. Images that I already uploaded to the internet.
Really, if you have stuff in your computer that you already have somewhere else, delete it. Just extra stuff laying around. It didn't free me much space, but 2GB are always appreciated.
