I say those look much better. I mean the Cortex Command-ified versions, on the right I presume.

Did these ages ago.. Sorta large..9ft tall i guess with their own big guns. Didn't use pallet though, only just found out about that :P Implementing all this is a bit ambitious for me at the moment but if anyone wants me to make art assets i'd like to help.

Ok, general question, how do you make a big, flat metal plate look good, using the CC palette? I'm using the gray-scale right down the bottom, under the purple-y one, as my basic shading, but.. It's just boring. Help!

Post it and I'll do an edit for you, size matters a bit too.

Thanks Lizard. It's hopefully going to be the German version of Major's Japanese walker.

Could always detail it like this:
Image
With corners explosed to the weather having the paint flake off, revealing the metal underneath, aswell as some cracks here and there.

not sure why you were making it so dark. my edit may or may not be worse than yours but the colors are closer to the reference picture at least.

Alright, I've been trying to do my dream idea of Von Neumann machines in Cortex Command. I've already decided on how they are going to function, but, I can't sprite if my life depended on it. I've got a source image :

But I don't know how much detail I can get into a drop ship size craft, and I'm not sure what it's scale should be.

Another question; What do I do for the underside? I have put some dirt, but it's not enough, suggestions?

Try a bit of imperfection like wear (not perfectly straight at bottom) and rust phasing into dirt..not too overboard but at least modifying all the pixels at the bottom slightly. that might do it.. Looking awesome by the way.
