He obviously has a rugged laptop and an AK-47 as his prized possessions.

Re: Phones
Sup guise. Along with a crank-operated portable power source to keep it charged, since the batteries litterally last for five minutes. I actually have a slightly newer one, but the flip-open sensor broke up and I got tired of having to short-circuit it with a paperclip whenever I wanted to call someone. EDIT: Oh, and I know a guy who broke the lcd display of his phone. Each day, I'd look at the thing, and a little bit of the crystal would have leaked, creating this weird expanding spot of psychedelic madness in one of the sides of the screen.

Not much point in a device made to contact people breaking if anything bad happens to it ever. I will never purchase a touchscreen phone, period. Note: I am a hypocrite, and I have an iPod touch which I cherish dearly. But, y'know.

Re: Phones
Iphone is dumb, and the data plan is expensive. Ipod touch is the greatest thing Apple has ever made. A hypocrite you are not.

I'm quite attracted to the prospect of coding/pixel art on the the go, as well as mobile internet. It seems I need to get a bunch of hardware and build my own but I don't really feel like learning how to make all the SIM-related schtuff work. :/

Making your own phone would be pretty sweet.

Yeah but you'd have to make an OS first.

Re: Phones
Nah, just use linux I'd probably use an ARM processor or similar but I'd have to look into all of that. If I could get linux working I'd be mostly set for my core utils, I'd just have to, as I said, look into getting the SIM card reading and working with the antenna. One of those Longer Term projects, but yeah it'd be pretty sweet. Maybe later.

I'd choose Android.

Re: Phones
Android would be the way to go. MIUI looks great, you should look into that. Not that building your own phone is remotely possible, though.

Re: Phones
Having a flashy smartphone wouldn't be the point of building my own phone. Those come off the shelf cheerfully, money allowing.
I don't see it as impossible either, just something I don't have the time to learn how to do at this point. EDIT: I just realised coming and re-reading that I sound fairly aloof here; I don't mean to say that it would be easy but more that with time and effort I'm fairly confident I'd be able to put together something that'd at least send SMS messages along with running linux for potential VOIP/programming/internet/whatever else. If I could get GSM calls going too that'd be a bonus but as I said, long term project.

I have an iphone 3GS The shell is cracked in one spot and it has scratches everywhere, but I'm perfectly content with it. I have an unlimited data plan and just tether it to my laptop for internet. Overall it is a very okay phone once jailbroken.
